SVCD Codecs

Post by MaF »

Using PictureShow 2, I want to create photo slideshows and distribute to family & friends. It seems VCD, SVCD as well as DVD will not be 100% compatible for all DVD players, and now I see they may not even be able to play it on their PC, due to Codec issues. Which format will be most compatible? Can I include any needed Codecs on the disk with the slideshow? Is it worth upgrading my software?

Okay, as far as DVD players here's how compatibility falls, from most likely to play in any given DVD player to least likely

1. DVD
2. VCD
3. SVCD

Also a (-) disk is more likely to work than a (+) disc. Typically you have a compatibility chart early in the manual or on the back of the DVD player.

As far as computers go, I'm pretty sure that any computer with a DVD player and the latest Windows Media Player, should be able to play any of the file types

Thanks.
I can view a SVCD on my PC at home using Windows Media Player with no problem. I assume that's because I'm viewing it on the same computer I used to create the disc. It has the proper Codecs loaded because I have the Ulead software installed on it. However, when I try to view it at work, I receive the message that I do not have the proper Codec. I get the music only.

Hmm, I've never had any problems playing a VCD on a different computer. Does the second computer have a DVD playing program? I think you might need one of those to get the codec you need.

Also make sure it has the latest version of Mieda Player. That might help

VCD works fine. SVCD does not. Does anyone know exactly which Codec is needed? I have 9 Codecs on my home machine, which I do not have at work. I have tried modifying the SVCD options (Legacy MPEGAV vs Standard MPEG2). Still no luck.

FYI - I found a codec pack from www.xpcodecpack.com that seems to work fine.
