UPDATED: X3 Service Pack 2 / Trouble with TIFF Files?
Corel Team, Got your ears on? And to the other fine forum users, can you please help me test this so that we might understand what is happening?
Note: My problem occurred while service pack 2 (13.2.0.35) was installed. I have since reverted back to service pack 1 (13.0.0.253) to eliminate this issue from occurring. Is there anyone here still running 13.2.0.35 that might look at this? Of course I would be interested if this is occurring in service pack 3 as well!
Here is the bottom line explanation of the problem I experienced: This may be a two-sided issue.
1) When resaving JPEGs as uncompressed TIFF files, it appeared that 13.2.0.35 would badly corrupt the new TIFF.
And / or
2) When reopening that new TIFF file in 13.2.0.35, X3 apparently thought the new TIFF was a RAW file … it was launching the RAW lab to display the image. The file was terribly corrupted … you couldn’t see the photograph at all.
As I explained in my original thread, this whole scenario was validated by a Corel technical agent when it occurred. Other forum participants here have also tested this scenario but found no problems.
The original thread on this issue is here: http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=39579
HERE IS THE NEW PART: A good friend of mine who just updated to 13.2.0.35 has tested this for me and experienced the same problem that I did. But there is a catch … it seems the issue has something to do with the exact camera that generated the original file. In my particular case, those original files were created by a Kodak Z1012 IS. With the exception of the Corel agent that helped me initially and my friend, anyone else that tested this scenario would not have had one of these files to work with, so I have attached one here. I had to resize the attached to 300dpi at 375 x 500 for this upload ... hopefully the size is okay.
Just to make sure we’re all on the same page I gave my friends the exact steps that I used when the problem occurred … I have included those steps here.
Perform this in the full editor, not the express editor.
1) Select any JPEG with valid EXIF (I have attached a file for testing)
2) Open that JPEG in X3
3) Resave the JPEG as a TIFF file (Select: FILE > SAVE AS > choose TIFF option > click on the “OPTION” tab in the SAVE AS dialogue box > select “UNCOMPRESSED” for the compression type > SAVE
NOTE: as best as I can determine, X3 will only save EXIF data in TIFF files when you select “uncompressed”
4) Close the TIFF file you just created
5) Reopen the TIFF file you just created
Stop. Does the TIFF file open like you expect (just like the original JPEG did)? Or, does your X3 try to launch the RAW lab to display the image?
My friend also tested this scenario with files from my Fuji camera and his own Nikon camera and did not have this problem … this is why we think it has something to do with the files generated by my Kodak.
Next, my friend tested a part of this scenario with my Kodak file in a different program. He saved my Kodak JPEG as a TIFF in another program, then opened it in 13.2.0.35 and everything looked normal … this is why we thought part of the problem was with how 13.2.0.35 actually created the TIFF.
And lastly, I will leave you with the conclusion that was drawn by the Corel agent that helped me with examples I uploaded to Corel’s FTP site ... these are his exact words:
“The reason the RAW Lab is appearing in the second picture is that it actually hold a true EXIF Tag … There was a small issue with the EXIF Data module when X3 was first released but it was swiftly corrected and fixed with the Service Pack releases. So this would explain that after the update why the RAW lab started appearing on you.”
NOTE: The last statement the Corel agent made refers to "after the update". This is in reference to my updating from 13.0.0.253 to 13.2.0.35
The “true EXIF tag” was never explained to me in a way that I could understand. I thought that a file either held EXIF data or it didn’t. Is there such a thing as a true EXIF tag, versus a false EXIF tag???
Thanks, folks, I really appreciate any feedback you may have!
Kevin

Okay, the photo you gave helps. Now I get the error. And I do have the third patch.
And I know nothing about EXIF so....no idea.

Looks like the TIF filter for PSP, Corel Photo-PAINT opens it ok.

Thank you, Mr. Fiction.
I think I know the answer to this already but ... when you installed your patch 3, had you already installed patch 2? Or, did you go from patch 1 straight to patch 3?

Already had patch 2. Until they tell us if we need them all or just the latest one I always install each one just in case.

Abiel,
I find no message. Are we talking about a message inside this forum, or an outside e-mail? ... I may need to check my junk e-mail filters ...
Thanks,
Kevin

Re: UPDATED: X3 Service Pack 2 / Trouble with TIFF Files?
Something to note, older Kodak camera's raw files were named .tif, so a Kodak file with full exif data in tact may trigger the raw lab. Of course it would have to be uncompressed as raw files wouldn't be compressed to begin with.
Just a thought. I might be way off.

Re: UPDATED: X3 Service Pack 2 / Trouble with TIFF Files?
FYI:
The .CR2 RAW files from my Canon 50D according to file size appear to be compressed. Some file formats do have non-loss compression schemes including some .tif formats. (In another editor I have it asks when saving a .tif if I'll allow LZW compression.)
