Removing Black/White Matte

Post by riggsdp »

Is there a way in PSPX3 to easily remove the black or white matte around an image? In Photoshop, you can choose Layer > Remove Black (or White) Matte and it quickly removes it but I'm not finding an easy way to do this in PSP.

ETA: Using the Background Eraser doesn't work as I'm removing sections of the background which means that the background is the same as the part I need to keep.

Remove Black Matte and Remove White Matte are actually hidden in Paint Shop Pro as unused commands.

I'm not sure as to why, or what command supposedly took over their job (as that is the most common reason for hiding them) but I do know how to get them back.

Go into the View menu and select Customize (View->Customize).

In the dialog under the "Commands" tab you'll see a list of all of the commands in Paint Shop Pro including a category called "Unused commands" in the left-hand categories list.

Go ahead and select this from the categories list and in the right-hand side you'll see icons with command names next to them of all of the currently unused Paint Shop Pro commands. If you go down in the list you'll find Remove Black (or White) Matte just waiting to be put back in. You'll also find Defringe if you're at all interested in that command.

Now with this dialog open go back to your menu bar and select the menu you want to add these commands to. If placing them in the Layer menu is easiest for you select the Layer menu. Once the menu is open you can drag the commands from the list into the menu and Paint Shop Pro will put them right back in.

If you want to give them special short-cut keys you can do that inside this customize dialog as well. Select the "Keyboard" Tab and select "Unusued Commands" from the list and select "Remove Black Matte" and "Remove White Matte" from the list of commands that comes up. You'll see a little text-box for adding the short-cut keys. Just select the key combination you want and Paint Shop Pro will tell you if it's already assigned to another command.

Once you're done editing Paint SHop Pro hit OK and you're ready to start using these old commands.

Thank you very much. I hated having to do stuff in PSP then switch to PS to do this task. This cuts down on my task time.
