'Cannot initialize application........fixed!'

Post by Millzy »

Hi everyone,

I'm new around here, this is my first post, hopefully someone can help. I Just bought a new HP laptop and it came with Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 pre installed. When I go to open the program I get the error messgae 'Cannot initialze application. The screen resolution is too small to play the video. The screen resolution must be set to at least 1024 x 768". Well the screen res is on 1600 x 900, so i thought i would have that covered. I tried changing the screen res to 1024 x 768 and get the same message. Any ideas would be extremely welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Welcome to the forums.. :)

Sorry for the very late response. This happens occasionally, especially when no one knows of a solution. This resolution restriction is somewhat confusing. You should be able to use one of those that you've tried (I have a Compaq and use a resolution of 1280 x 800). Since it is not, it may be that your VS is corrupted. You might need to try re-installing it. However, noticing that it came pre-installed on your pc, I must ask where did you get the PC? HP does not provide this, to my knowledge anyway, on any of their computers. If you purchased your laptop second-hand, did you also get any installation CDs?

Hi Ron,

Thanks so much for your reply. Sorry this end for the late response, I assumed no one had any info so I hadn't re-checked the forum since now. I too have a feeling the install is corrupt in some way.

I bought the laptop brand new from JB Hi Fi. It is a HP Envy and came pre-installed with Paintshop Pro X3 and VideoStudio X3 so as you say there are no disks. Paintshop Pro works perfectly but I am unable to even open VideoStudio, and get the error message previously posted. I've tried lots of screen resolutions but none will work. I would love to use the software but have no idea how to fix this. Hope this info helps in some way. If I had a disk I would re-install, but again there is no disk! Appreciate anything further you can offer. The last thing I could think of would be to write to HP but i'm not expecting much luck there. Or would Corel assist in providing me a working version if I could somehow prove my copy was pre-installed but corrupt??? I dunno, I'm clutching at straws I know. Anyway I'll wait to hear your reply. Happy New Year!

Most new computers/laptops come with a recovery disc of some sort which allows you to re-install your supplied software - did you not get any sort of recovery disc with your laptop - or software recovery from a hidden disc partition accesible by following strict instructions supplied with the laptop.

Failing that many of the big computer stores can re-install all software to factory condition if you return the laptop to the store you bought it from - your contract is with them - if they cannot give you a working copy of VideoStudio on your laptop they must replace it for one which does work.

I would also think that whether your original install of VS was of the full version or a special version, it should be capable of registration somehow or other with Corel. If not done already, then it should still be possible. Or if you can possibly find it, then with a Serial Number, you should be able to call them... Or even without one... !!!

Thanks Gents for trying to help me out here.

Firstly to BrianCee, no there was no recovery disks received with my HP Envy. I think the onus now lies with the user these days to create their own set of back up disks when the computer is charged up and ready to roll. Unfortunatley I didnt do this straight up so no luck there for me. Maybe its just a HP thing but the last 2 HP lappies I've bought never had recovery disks supplied.

To Ken Berry, yes that's sort of my line of thinking at the moment. I'm pretty keen to get this sorted because I absolutley love Paintshop Photo Pro (its a lot more intuitive to me than a lot of other photo apps I've used) and I'm hoping that VideoStudio is just as userfriendly and powerful. Any idea of a number or contact at Corel I should take this up with?

Thanks again in advance, this seems like an extremely helpful and friendly forum.

OK, here's what happened - hope this helps someone one day.

Right clicked on the VideoStudio icon and went into Properties and then Compatibility. I checked the "disable display scaling on high dpi settings" box and bingo, VideoStudio now opens! Not sure what is going on there but I stumbled across it while I was fiddling around. HP livechat support or whatever it's called were pretty good - I found you can re-install factory loaded software using recovery manager. That didnt fix the problem however, but I learnt something! FWIW this lappy is a HP ENVY 14. Thanks all for your efforts, now I gotta learn the program.

Cheers,

Wow, I never would have thought that was a fix. I've seen it on the properties dialog but have never bothered with it. Now we know when someone else with the same/similar problem, how to fix it.

Thanks for reporting back the solution!! :)

Millzy, yes thank you. Used your solution to the same problem I was having in PhotoImpact x3.
