dual layer dvd capacity

Post by scoutmaster5 »

I am using VS 8 with a dual layer dvd burner. In the share/create disc step, when selecting menus, the program says I need 7.92 GB of disc space and that I have 8.5 GB of space available.

When I go to the burn step, it says I need 8.2 GB and that the DVD only has 8.0 GB of space available.

Is there a work around for this. I don't want to mess up the dvd since the discs are so expensive.

You can create a disc image file first and then burn from that.

Actually I think scoutmaster5 is running into the difference between two definitions of what a "gig" means.

One is that a gig is 1000 megs. Simple enough.

One is that a gig is 1024 megs. Oops.

You'll often see storage devices etc. sold with a capacity using the former, which maximizes the theoretical capacity, while Windows will report the devices capacity using the latter.

Needless to say the latter will be smaller.

This is the same reason why a "4.7 gig" DVD +/- R/RW blank can only hold ~4.2 gigs of actual MPEG-2 content.

I am always Overburning CD's, never tried but can you Overburn a DVD? Otherwise, compression before you burn to disc is your only option.

I am just explaining what VS8 is reporting. It would be nice to have the software tell me what the real story is.

How do you do compression?

Have a look at the sizes for DVD-9 discs (Dual Layer):

Thanks,

But it still doesn't explain why VS8 said I only had 8GB of space on the dual layer dvd.

I have a Plextor 716a and it says the same about DL’s that although the disc capacity is 8.5 I can only record a max of 7.92. I was told to be on the safe side to record up to 7.9 and leave that little bit of space in reserve.

There is a way to check on the Errors and what files are causing the problem. Right-click on My Computer and from the Menu Item Dialog select Manage. In the computer Management Dialog Box, navigate to the Tree Item named Event Viewer, expand the Tree. You will see three additional Tree Items, Application, Security, and System. Open each one in turn and look for a Red Icon, called Error, in the left most columns. Double-click on the Error and you will get a short explanation of the problem. You will be given a URL to click on and go to Microsoft and find a solution, if they have one.

As far as compression goes use the Optimizer, change resolution, change size, frames, there all kinds of ways to compress and condense your images while creating. The quality and what you are trying to achieve is also a concern. The manual gives you several options and ways to save on size.

DVD-9, holds around 8 540 000 000 bytes and that is 7.95 computer GB. DVD+R supports this format. Also called Single Sided Dual Layered. This media is called DVD+R9, DVD+R DL or 8.5 GB Media.

Do you see the line that says "and that is 7.95 computer GB" :?:
