capture problem?
i have a problem that it only seems to happen when i am using my friends video camera PANASONIC nv-gs30b
i set everything up to capture through firewire the video on his camera.
i use ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO 8...i hit play and the preview window shows what is on the camera....but as soon as i hit CAPTURE, the system stalls, hourglass appears and soon after a pop up appears with..
"Ulead video studio cannot capture"
and down below, the message..
"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file on P: (my externall drive)The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection (cannot be for this as this pc is ONLY used for music and Video - it is not connected to internet). Pleasse try to save this file elsewhere.
This failure forces Windows to knock my ext drive from being recognized (ie..it does not show up when i go to MY COMPUTER). I then have to deal with the :"safe removal" issue because i have set the removal policy to OPTIMIZE FOR PERFORMANCE to get the best out of the ext HDD.
I power the ext drive off then on...the green light comes back on and after a while the drive is recognized by WIndows. I have a crack at using this drive with my SONYcamera(which works all the time) doing the same exercise and the same message appears.
I then power off and on the ext HDD, it is recognized by windows and i am able to explore the contents which i copy to another drive, do a QUICK FORMAT and when i use my SONY for the exercise it works perfect.
The Video software recognizes PANASONIC. It may be driver related or something about the camera that windows does not like! Or maybe the firewire cable?
I then try this exercise on my other hard drive and my own camera (Sony) and it works perfect. Too scared to use the PANASONIC as i have important stuff on the other drives.

Quoting myself:
Of course, once you get the video onto your hard drive, you can edit it with Video Studio as usual. You may have to use the capture/transfer software that came with your video card/camera. Video capture drivers don't seem to be as standardized as the drivers for more common computer stuff (like printers).

thanks for replying,
yes the camera is recognized and camera is in playback mode,
got a new firewire cable, reformatted drive, BUT in the removal policies i ticked "optimize for quick removal"
Also, i unchecked "allow indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching"
at least this time the system allowed me to capture footage which i left go for a while until i went to stop capture, and nothing happened.
Camera was still going, and i had to stop the capture process by interrupting
with STOP on the actual camera. I received same message as original and in library on the right of screen, about 20 thumbnails were produced but nothing was stored on the drive.
any ideas

some of the Pana cameras have trouble being properly recognized by the firewire drivers
I don't know the GS30 but you may try one of those two things:
try first powering the connected camera in playback mode when windows is idle, only then start VideoStudio.
or start capture mode with powered off camera (connected) then wait for the Ulead message that no device is found, then power on the camera in playback; when you get the message "there is a new device do you want to use it" say yes to both message boxes.
Depending on camera models, either one or the other always worked for me. Never plug the cable when the camera is already on.

Here's an update...
Using another minidv camera i confronted the same problem on the ext hdd.
So i took the plunge and tried to capture footage on one of my smaller internal hdd.
PERFECT.
So, how do i go about understanding this issue. My ext hdd can capture footage from MY OWN CAMERA, but not these other two (both being minidv).?
help!
ps...prior to this round of exercises, i read on the ulead forum that a similar problem was overcome by updating WINDOWS INSTALLER.
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewto...light=installer
so i checked mine and boy was it old. I installed the current version. Just in case!!
froggy (i suppose i could try downloading to my smaller int hdd and then transferring to the ext hdd...)

You can do either of the following to try and correct the hardware/software problem:
Install another fiirewire card and use that for just the harddisk or camcorder so both
devices are on separate bus-chains.
Connect the harddisk as USB2 if you can instead of firewire.
(Do not connect BOTH the firewire and USB cable to the harddisk at
the sametime).
Actually you are having a hardware issue in the firewire chain
of devices. If you had other devices connected they to would have
a problem (such as an external dvd burner).
Very common on laptop machines with a pcmcia firewire card
You don't need to have windows index the files on the external harddisk.
You can disable write-caching for the drive IF you have a slower machine
and only 512megs of memory.
Also search the windows website for this problem.
If you can connect the external drive as USB2 should fix the problem and
the only device on the firewire chain would then be the camcorder.
Hope this helps,
MD

hi md,
yes, thanks for those suggestions...i will get to them as soon as i ..
1)checked for IRQ conflicts....there were 2 other devices on same irq as 1394 but when i created separate boot file it still did not fix the problem.
i heard that using usb2 is best for downloading pictures, will there be issues with dropped frames?
cheers froggy

As long as you aren't using USB2 for another device at the sametime
you can capture dv.avi full stream with USB2.
Trying to solve an IRQ conflict on XP and with the new motherboards
is very hard. USB is a sharable IRQ. It's in the spec to share the pci bus
and not hog or fail to release it. I don't think that's what's happening.
Firewire devices can disconnect themselves from the firewire bus and
also the operating system can disconnect them from the bus.
Depends on the chipset on the firewire card, motherboard and drivers.
I've had good results with the Adaptec firewire 3 port pci cards.
(Bad results with VIA chipset firewire cards).
I think this problem was also reported to Microsoft.
Try putting the harddisk on USB2 port.
Nothing to lose by trying. Mine works on USB2 no problems.

Yahoooooo!
MD.......you the MAN!!!!!!!
got myself a second firewire card.....(did a little stuffing around beforehand which i'll mention later) inserted....system detects it
-and this one is used just for the ext hdd while
- i use the other for camera input
smooth.......capture process and writing to ext hdd is underway! the people i'm doing this for will be so happy...early days yet!
(earlier...i had read the manual that came with ieee and noticed it said " if you have to use all the buses it would be advised to connect power to this card...i disconnected one of my - actually both my cd drives cos otherwise would not reach- connected power to ieee but same problem existed)
anyway, a million thank yousssss
(yes i was about to delve into the wonderful world of updating ieee drivers
but....)
cheers
froggy
(ps.....well, i used aida to check my system and ....my l2 cache is disabled!....i wonder if that was the cause all along - couldn't be until i go back and try the whole exercise with l2 enable THIS TIME!)

That's great it's working now.
Some additional information on the powering setup of firewire
for cabling purposes:
The large connector on the firewire card has 6 pins:
You only need 4 pins to transfer firewire (the data pins).
The extra pins are for suppling the power within the firewire cable.
The small firewire connectors on a camcorder only carry data which
is the small 4 pin connector.
Almost all the external firewire drives I've seen don't need the
6 pin connector because they are self-powered.
So the point of this is if you do power the firewire card for external
devices when you plug the 4 pin connector to the camcorder the
power pins are terminated in the cable. Not used.
Hope this helps,
MD
