Lossless MTS clip trimming

Post by dnadle »

I'd like to trim mts video clips and save these trimmed clips in the same mts format (to avoid losses due to re-rendering in another format). It seems that there are no mts output options available (all hi-def options save the trimmed clip in mpeg format). Any suggestsions? Thanks much!

Hi Dave

There are loads of video types containing different properties.
Video Studio copes ok with some but not all not, those of which will have to be recoded to another form.

When you Share Create Video File do you see the option Same as First Video Clip.
If yes then VS will render using your video files properties.

You can also use Make Movie Templates Manager to create your own template, Using the “Add” option will copy your video files properties. Once created it is best not to edit the template.

the template will be available from Share Create Video-bottom of list

Trevor,

Thanks much for the reply.

Both options you mention create an mpeg rendering of my mts file. Are there any options which will not re-render and produce the same mts format as the original clip? Thanks.

Hi

Mts is Mpeg2 , a container holding your video.

If you compare the properties of your original video to the one you created you should find that they are identical.
The file size may vary a little, I think this may be due to Variable bit rates.
In addition you should disable Smart Render, this option has caused some problems when working with HD.

Trevor,

Thanks for the mts/mpeg2 information.

The reason I'm concerned about re-rendering and losses is that there is significant processing and time required to re-render a clip using VS3; typically trimming a clip and maintaining the same format is a quick, low processing demand activity.

My plan was to quickly review and trim my mts video clips (from my Panasonic ZS3), use these trimmed clips as the basis of future editing source and delete the original clips. The VS3 approach seems a cumbersome way to achieve this simple objective.

Hi Dave

Your camera, the ZS3 is the same as TZ7 provided in Europe. I assume you are in the US.
It produces Video using AVCHD Lite, now this is a relatively new video type.
Camera manufacturers seem to do things like this, leaving the editing programs to catch up
AVCHD video is not the easiest format to edit (for any editor) and the Lite version hasn’t helped. Most would advise that you convert to a more editable format.
So when it comes to AVCHD there is no such thing as “a low processing demand activity.”

It would be nice if Panasonic would provide good editing software with the camera.

Having said that the camera is one of the best of its type, but then its only a still image camera with motion capabilities. I suppose it could be classed as a hybrid.

I have a TZ5 which just may need replacing, (they don’t like being dropped)
I would opt for the TZ7/ZX3.
I am glad that they have retained the HD Motion Jpeg option as I found very good.

By the way can you provide a AVCHD sample from the ZS3

Hi Dave

To add, I have just noticed that the camera does come with an editing program, PHOTOfunSTUDIO HD Edition

Interested to know if this would produce MTS files.
