Borders

Post by auggybendoggy »

Hi,
I've got a 13x19 inch image set up then I imported a small 2x2 (inch) image into the 13x19.
I want to add a white border around the 2x2 inch image but the only border tool I see is in "image" which adds a border to the 13x19.

In Picture Publisher there were only objects and so you would simply select the object and then mask and stoke with the width/color and so on.

Thanks,

Gene

I'm having a hell of a frustrating time jumping into Corel. I want to import small 2 x 2 images into my 13 x 19 but there is no aligment tool. Each 2x2 is on it's own layer???
It seems the alignment tool is only for objects. So my 2x2 image in it's own layer (though selected) is not not treated as an object.

Any help would be appreciated.

Alignment for regular objects, it's true there is no set alignment methods but there are a number of things you can do.

For example turning on rulers and using guides (just make sure when you first create a guide to set it down right away before adjusting it's position) and moving the guides to support your image. They will allow you to determine where things should go. This is especially useful if you turn on snap to guides. Then using the pick/move tools you can easily move through everything.

In the pick tool you can set exact locations for the image, some simple math in your head is usually more than enough to know where you want to place your image. For example the center of the image is half the 13x19 image's width and height minus half of the 2x2 image's width and height (in pixels of course width and height mean nothing until printed so they're useless to me).

The other possibility is scripts. I don't know of any alignment ones off hand but they should be rather easy to find or make up. I suppose that all depends on what you're looking for with alignment.

As for the border, remember the tutorial on doing the photo in photo effect? You're going to have to do something like that to get the smaller border around the layer. Though I suppose a script to do that as well would be in order, I wonder if someone has. What am I saying, of course someone has. Just have to find it.

I'm sure one of the older users has a number of script resources you can use. Also do your own searches. I tend to make my own scripts so I'm not overly familiar with the different sites.

You know....now that I think about it if you want to add borders you could just use the Image Borders command on your 2x2 image before copying it over to your 13x19 image. Would save you a lot of work.

Now, while I still suggest you look for sites with scripts I also sat down and hammered these out quickly so you can use them if you want. Put them into your Scripts-Restricted folder.

The ones that say Align obviously align the currently selected layer on the canvas to either the Top, Left, Bottom, Right, Center, Horizontal Center, or Vertical Center of the canvas.

The LayerSymmeticalBorder script creates a solid symmetrical border around the opaque areas of your image using a border size you specify. It's not as good as the borders command but it works. Maybe after supper I'll make one that's more like the borders command....then again maybe not. Knowing how to script is not the equivalent of being good at it, I'm probably over complicating these.

Levi,
Ok regarding guides:

I set the guides and select "snap to guides" but unfortunately, images which are pasted as a layer do not snap to guides??? Any idea why? I created a text object and it snaps to the guides but an image in another layer does not?

It's funny because PSP has so much to offer but lacks in some basic qualities. If a Picture Publisher user is going to gawk at the program for not handling basic functions like these, then how would Corel manage to win over Photoshop users to it's platform? Perhaps they don't but that's like declaring their product does not offer much in comparison with Corel.

My frustration is that these basic functions probably would not make a top ten list amongs users because they already know how to cope. I seriously doubt Corel would take such suggestions seriously, as that's been my experience with other programs...of course maybe it's just my lousy suggestions :)

Thanks for the help Levi.
