VS X3 trial version: Problem playing mpeg2 file.
Downloaded and installed the latest VS X3 trial version 13.6.2.42. Direct X is installed on the PC.
There is a problem when I try to play in VS X3 any MPEG2 file created with the earlier version of VS 7SE. The video playback is too fast and I hear only an intermittent high pitch noise. There is no problem playing the same file with the Windows Media Player.
I can play without problem .avi file captured from a DV camcorder. The VS X3 sample files play fine as well.
Any idea?
Thanks.

Well, no... unless you right click on the file and tell us ALL the properties...
And of course DirectX will be on your computer -- it is an integral and essential part of Windows. But the important question is whether you have manually updated it to the June 2010 version. It is not automatically updated by Windows Update...

Thanks for the reply, Ken.
Attached is the screen shot showing properties of the file. I just downloaded the latest update for Direct X from Microsoft web site. Attached is the Direct X diagnostics screen shot. Thanks,
Michael.

Actually, I meant the Properties of the mpeg files, since they are the ones giving you problems...

These are the properties of the MPEG2 file that gives me the problem.

No, the screenshot is not properties of an MPEG-2 file. That is clearly a DV (avi) file.makcor wrote:These are the properties of the MPEG2 file that gives me the problem.

Re: VS X3 trial version: Problem playing mpeg2 file.
You are correct, I took the properties of a wrong file. The attached screen shot is from the MPEG2 file that gives me the problem in VS Pro X3.
The same file has no problem while being played in the old VS 7 SE.
Even though the old VS had some bugs and stability problems, I am starting to think it is not worth moving over to VS Pro X3. The new VS may have some problems on its own.
I am working on converting old family VHS tapes to DVD's, and the new VS may not provide any advantages over the old.
Thanks.

Re: VS X3 trial version: Problem playing mpeg2 file.
First out of curiosity, what program did you use to obtain the properties of your video file? VS does not provide that degree of detail for the properties, and Windows certainly does not, unless maybe Win7 does. What stands out in your screenshot is the compression of 0%. I've never heard of MPEG video not being compressed.
Since you're in NTSC area, try changing the audio compression from MPEG audio Layer-1, to PCM. For some reason MPEG audio works better for PAL area. I know that using a lower kHz for audio can pose problems. I have some old digital-8 video where the audio was recorded on the camcorder at 32kHz, or using 8-bit mono or stereo created problems when I tried using it in another video editing application. I had to recode the video, changing just the audio to correct it.
With the full version of VS X3 you're able to use Dolby Digital, which is what I mainly use now. My home videos are recorded/captured with 16 bit, 48,000kHz stereo.

Re: VS X3 trial version: Problem playing mpeg2 file.
Thanks, Ron,
I used the old VS 7 SE to obtain the properties of the file. I right-clicked on the video and selected Properties in VS. To copy the properties screen I do Alt-PrtScrn, open Paint, paste the buffer and save it as a JPEG.
As far as my old VHS tapes, none of them are stereo, I believe, so making them Dolby Stereo may not improve anything.
I will try to manipulate the video as you suggested.
Thanks again.
Michael.
