Uninstall help
I uninstalled then reinstalled VS9 to see if it would fix any of my problems but after reinstall VS9 seems to have remembered my previous settings. Apparently the uninstall doesn't remove everything. How can I do a complete uninstall of VS9.
Thanks

Do the following:
Uninstall All Ulead products from your system first; you then need to delete two sets of Ulead Folders, only delete the Ulead Systems Folders, not the whole tree!
The first can be found at C:\Documents and Settings\xxx(user name)xx\Application Data\Ulead Systems. The second Ulead Folder is at location C:\Program Files\ Ulead Systems.
Once this is done empty the Recycle Bin, Reboot your computer, once in XP again then go to Restore, and restore your computer to a day or two before the first time you installed VS9.
That should give you a clean slate, even the Registry should now be cleaned of all Ulead Keys.

Arrrrg!!
I uninstalled VS9.
Then searched computer for keyword "ulead" and deleated everything it found. repeated with keyword videostudio.
Then used regedit and searched registry for keywords "ulead" and "videostudio" and deleted all keys it found!
I then rebooted without any antivirus, firewall etc... programs running.
Then reinstalled VS9 trial version and waited for it to ask me for my purchase# but it finished the install without asking for any proof of my purchase??? Somehow it still knew I had an unlocked trial version so I must have missed something in the registry or it is hidden well.
Needless to say I still cant download any content due to same error "cannot get URL from push file"
So I decided to install trial version on my laptop and when I ran VS9 it asked for purchase#. I entered this info and booted VS9. The smart download worked great on my laptop so I decided to copy the content packs from my laptop to my desktop.
When I tried to install content pack on my desktop I got error that said "Installer cannot find Ulead Videostudio 9 FULL on your machine. Please install Ulead Videostudio 9 FULL first" wtf??
So it seems I am stuck in between a trial version and the full version. One other thing I noticed is that my laptop version lists a sn# in the about screen but my desktop does not.
Ulead tech support has not responded.

Yes Well Hidden. In the Registry and on the drive.
Did you try to use the Restore feature before you reinstalled V9?
It would have gotten rid of the Registry Keys that might still be hiding there, also you would not have had to hack the Registry, the Restore feature would have done that for you.
You don't need to search your drive, after you have uninstalled Ulead just go to the Folder locations I listed previously and delete the Ulead Systems Folder, which contains all of the Ulead Products with subFolders and configuration info. There are two locations and so there are two Folders to delete.
If you didn't try the instructions I gave you in the previous thread, follow them to the letter, and it should work.

Hi,
Wait a minute, do I risk the same problems with the trial version uninstall?
I already have VS8 (full). If I install the trial VS9 then remove it will I have trouble later installing the VS9 upgrade? I have Win2000 and no restore possibility from a year ago when I installed VS8....
Or would you suggest installing the trial on another computer?

As an old programmer, I can tell you from experience, never install a Trial if you already have a Full installed of the same program, even different Version.
Anytime you have a Full install of most software packages, of one Version, and then install a Trial of a Newer Version, you are going to overwrite some of the Full Registry Keys and files. This will often leave your uninstall crippled and without a way to uninstall either program correctly. Which means down the road should you have to uninstall the Upgrade you will be in DEEP DUEDUE; not to mention the fact, but I will, that you may encounter major install problems with the Upgrade!
Old Programmer Moto, "Uninstall it All, before New!" Unless you have a download and no install disc, that is another area ALLtogether, don't uninstall anything as you will have nothing to provide for the Upgrade when it asks to see you previous install disc for qualification.
Life is really a Bowl of Lemons and Sea Salt!

thanks a lot for your advice.
I will install VS9-trial on another machine and if I buy the upgrade (download) pray for the best. At least I suppose it will not require (and probably forbid) an uninstall.
And inbetween I'll be very nice and talk softly to the CDs with the downloads of my VS8. Just in case I need them again...

I deleted the folders you mentioned but am not sure how to do a Restore. I have windows2000.
I did find the reg key with the license information, just search for Softwrap and afterwards when I installed it asked me for my license info. Unfortunately this did not fix my problem and if you do this too many times your softwrap account becomes disabled.
Luckly I called the 24/7 softwrap support hotline and they promptly reenabled my account, why cant Ulead have great support like Softwrap??
Anyway I'm afraid I'll have to wait for Ulead to respond with a solution, If they respond!
I did notice that when I installed the software on my laptop everything works well, the smartdownload works and when I check the "About" page it shows a serial#, My desktop computer does not show a serial# implying the product is not registered but the nag screen "Please buy this software in 30 days or it will self destruct" is gone. So I have a partial Full install.

Before you do a System Restore be aware that if you have reinstalled VS that turning back the clock to an earlier time will delete the present Registry Keys. So again you still have to uninstall VS delete the Folder I mentioned before you turn the clock back with the Restore Feature.
I don't have 2000 but you should look for the same Shortcut named System Restore. I can find that by going to the Start, Program, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.
After clicking on System Restore you will be given the option to restore your computer to an Earlier Date, doing so will give you a calander or list style display that showes the available Restore Points in Dates. Just pick the date (Restore Point) that was before the time you installed Ulead, and follow the instructions.
If you can't find System Restore there then go to Help and Support and type in System Restore, and it will tell you how to Restore your computer to an earlier date.
If that dosen't work for you then do a file search for rstrui.exe, this is the Restore exe file. My Retore exe file is located at C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe.
Picking a Restore Point Date a few days before will set the Registry Values back to that point in time before your VS added New Keys.

Excuse my Ignorance I thought 2000 did have the Restore Feature. WELL, In that case, there is only two other alternatives left to consider, should you want to consider them.
Do a Registry Scan with a Reg Cleaner and either manually remove the Keys as listed by the program, or have the Reg Cleaner do that for you. You can get a free Scan here www.pctools.com an excellent and safe Reg Cleaner: Registry Mechanic
If you download the Trial version, then do a Scan, all of the Keys to be removed will be listed; it will not remove them unless you purchase the package.
The other method, which Tech support will probably suggest will be to Reformat your Hard Drive, Install your OS, then your preferred applications, renewing them to a pristine operating condition. That will no doubt give them the opportunity to function as was designed, and “you will live happily ever after.” Yeah, Right! Life is till a Crap Shoot!

I don't know about kawikdx225 but I'm believing I'll get option 1.
If it fails I will use the second, which was obvious and feared from the start, and ease my pain by considering the side benefits of a clean restart.
Mind you I played sorcerer's apprentice and installed VS8 on a test machine, then installed VS9 trial, then uninstalled the trial and VS8 looks to be happy as before. If the upgrade would install is something else...
The whole process that machine, as my video editing station, was off the web.

In your situation I would recommend what was recommended to me many years ago and has really worked. I to have to be Online, and am always being sent nasty little bugs that cause serious infections, not to mention all of the software upgrade I must endure.
A Big DVD Player that burns quick with DL capability.
A copy of Ghost, I go with the DOS version 2003, works for me. It takes approx 35 minutes to backup a 5 gig partition to a Bootable DVD. Or, I prefer this method; create the Image file, takes 5 minutes. Boot to the OS and copy the Image file to DVD, takes 6 minutes.
Partition your Hard Drive so that you have a small partition for your OS of about 10 to 12 Gigs, the rest for additional apps and storage.
Do a complete reformat, twice, and then install all of your OS and only the applications you use the most to the main Partition. All of the rest to another partition or maybe a second drive should you not want to partition the first drive.
Once everything’s has been patched and updated, make a copy of your Partition, no more Key Validations necessary in the future. Keep this Partition as a Permanente Back-up. Every few weeks or once a month, clean out you Internet garbage, get rid of all of the unnecessary Tmp files and so on. Get and apply all of the updates and patches, then do a NEW FULL Partition backup of the Main Drive. Label everything and keep in a safe place, don’t destroy the previous backups, trust me on this one.
I don't have errant applications anymore, and If I do, it makes no difference, I never used System Restore because of the virus problems, I just reinstall my current Partition Back-Up, defrag the drive. I use Perfect Disc 7.0, can’t live without it.
Problems solved back to my normal workload in less than 15 minutes.

There's no way I'm formating and reinstalling all my apps, that would take me weeks to get back to where I'm at now. I have way too much stuff on my pc.
Ulead tech support did respond with the following advice:
1) Clean up temp files from\Start menu\Programs\Accessories\System
Tools\Disk Cleanup.
2) Uninstall VideoStudio 9 from control panel Add/Remove programs
3) Delete following folders =>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc
=>C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\My Documents\Ulead VideoStudio
=>C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\
4) Reinstall VideoStudio 9 again and all the components.
I followed their advice exactly and had the same problem as before. I requested a link to download the full version from their FTP server. They replied saying they needed proof of purchase. I e-mailed them my receipt of purchase from softwrap and await their reply.

Have you tried this option yet?
Do a Registry Scan with a Reg Cleaner and either manually remove the Keys one at a time as listed by the program, or have the Reg Cleaner do that all at once for you. The nice thing about the Reg cleaner is that you can select only the Keys you want to delete, or let the program make the decision for you. Another nice feature is the Cleaner saves each change you make so you can go back and put the deleted Keys back into the Registry should your System croak!
You can get a free Scan here www.pctools.com an excellent and safe Reg Cleaner: Registry Mechanic
