.mov (MPEG4-AVC) crash work around
Hopefully I am on the right track with this bit of info. I have been downloading some video from my iphone and Canon 5D camera, both in .mov format which I understand to be a MPEG4-AVC. When I try to play this .mov file on the edit line in Video studio 11 plus or Video Studio Pro X3 it crashes. So reading a few posts I found others with the same problem. Seems that Video Studio hasn't caught up to the conversion yet. So to work around this problem I have found a suitable converter program at SourceForge called MP4Cam2AVI Easy Converter v2.83 http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi/ . I tried a few other freeware programs but they had noticeable losses in the video quality, this program had seeming very little. It will convert the .mov file to an .avi file type and I can now work on these files. And the bonus is it is free. Hopes this helps or maybe someone can point me in the right direction if I am doing something wrong with the .mov files working in Video Studio.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Re: .mov (MPEG4-AVC) crash work around
Thanks for the information, but it would be important to know exactly which version of .avi it is converted to!
Just as .mov is these days a wrapper extension used for a variety of other formats, .avi is the mother of all wrapper extensions and used by over 800 different video types...

Hi
I posted a reply to your other post (Templates) regarding a possible Quicktime fix,
Along with some info regarding 5D camera video type.
Did you see that post?
Additional Info
I own a Canon 7D which as far as I know produces the same type of Mov.
I do not have problems using these files with Video Studio

Re: .mov (MPEG4-AVC) crash work around
Ken
This was the introduction to the file changing of this program to answer your question on file format type.
MP4Cam2AVI is MPEG4/MJPEG to AVI converter/joiner for MPEG-4 camcorders and digital photo cameras. It makes MPEG-4 ASP camera clips DivX/XviD compatible and playable with any DVD-MPEG4 player like regular MPEG-4 movie. Program supports *.MP4, *.MOV, and *.AVI input.
MJPEG video from photo-cameras is supported as well. Program converts *.MOV MJPEG clips to MJPEG AVI (without recompression) or to XviD MPEG-4 AVI (with recompression) in one click.
MP4Cam2AVI supports MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video from new H.264 cameras like Sanyo CG65 and Casio EX-V7 (to view target AVI, H.264 VfW codec needed, i.e latest FFDShow).
By default, MP4Cam2AVI doesn't recompress video, that means no quality loss and fast operation (5-20x realtime, depending on audio settings). Audio can be stored in source format, or converted to MP3 (best for DVD-MPEG4 players) or PCM (best for editing).
Also, MP4Cam2AVI can convert MJPEG video to MPEG-4 ASP using XviDcore GPL library. That means you can convert MJPEG MOV's from photo camera to DivX-compatible AVI in one click.
MP4Cam2AVI converts MPEG-4 ASP *.MP4 files from Nero Recode (MPEG-4 ASP video/AAC audio) to DivX AVI format with MP3 audio - it's fast and loseless for video.
Unlike many converting apps, MP4Cam2AVI doesn't require QuickTime or any codecs to work, it performs all the job itself.
Trevor
Thanks for your notes Trevor on the .264 format. Now my question here is if I install the H.264 VfW codec will I be able to work with the .mov file I have been having problems with or is this just with the .avi. I am not really understanding codecs very well.

Re: .mov (MPEG4-AVC) crash work around
I have the same issue, my camera (Nikon CoolPix S8100) produces MOV format (Video:MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, Audio: AAC stereo). A sample movie can be found here: http://img.photographyblog.com/reviews/ ... 100_01.mov
Ulead VS Pro X2 doesn't suport this format. Using the convertor mentioned in the previous post, Ulead is able to import / read the file. However the program immediately starts to be slower. The moment I create a DVD (via share) it freezes.
So what's the best way to process MOV files in with Ulead VS Pro X2

Hi requestor12
I am able to import this file to Video Studio X2
You will need to use Smart Proxy enabling, make sure the files have been created.
VS playback and quality seemed a little poor, I used VCL Player where the quality showed as ok.
I was able to render the file to a standard DVD Mpeg2 file, however being in Pal area had to create a template to Ntsc.
Quality was reduced compared to original I had used Upper Field, then I rendered using Frame Based much improved video quality..
A fast efficient PC, Quad core would allow you to play these types.
What you convert to depends on what you are intending to make, I assumed you were burning a standard DVD.
Are you able to add the video to X2 timeline?
If you are struggling to play the file then try using the batch convert to create a new Mpeg2 file.
Are you Pal or Ntsc
Can you update your profile to include your PC Spec’

Re: .mov (MPEG4-AVC) crash work around
Hi Trevor, Thanks for you reply. If you can import .MOV, I must do something wrong. Based on your response I have the following settings now:
1. Enable Smart proxy
2. created proxy when size video is above: 720*480
3. Proxy folder: D:\temp\ulead\
4. Auto generate proxy template
5. Video proxy options: MPEG files, 24 bits, 720*576, 25fps, Frame/based, (DVD-PAL), 16:9, video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps), LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo)
You wrote: "You will need to use Smart Proxy enabling, make sure the files have been created".
Question 1: what do you mean?
Question 2: You wrote: Why did you have to create a template to Ntsc?
And yes, I want to create a DVD (PAL)
When I try to import the .MOV to the timeline,(Open video file, all formats), the .MOV is not even presented. When i set it to all files and open the file, the following message is presented: "Unable to open file [C:\Users\M\Desktop\filename.mov] File format mismatch. [16803:1:3]
The sample movie can be found here: http://img.photographyblog.com/reviews/ ... 100_01.mov

Ron
To download the sample I right click the link and choose “save Target As”
requestor12
How are you trying to open / insert the video file, you should right click the timeline and select insert video……………..
The details /properties of the video file are shown here, they are NTSC as identified by the frame rate of 29.97
VS doesn't read the file correctly as it doesn't show h264 as the compression type.
If you wish to create another video file then you should use the same, other than that you are converting a Ntsc to Pal. If that is so then you can create a new template using Make Templates Movie Manager.
Creating proxy files can take a long time, view Proxy File Manager to see what has been created.

I did, and all I get is a 1kb file. I can download from the link he provided in his earlier post. Is this one the same or different?

Re: .mov (MPEG4-AVC) crash work around
FWIW, I too only got a 1 KB file from the second link, and it won't open in either X2 or X4. Moreover, Quicktime player 7.6.9 (which I think is the current version) says it is not a type of format it "understands"! The first link, however, is around 31 MB in size. Moreover, like Trevor, I too can happily open and play it in X2 (as well as X4). It is a slight bit jerky, but I suspect that was in the original video since it appears that way in Quicktime player too.
However, when I try to output the file as a DVD-compliant mpeg-2 -- again like Trevor using NTSC settings -- X2 consistently crashed in all four of my attempts. I tried outputting as Frame Based, Upper and Lower Field First and even just a straight out PAL DVD format, but all failed.
X4, on the other hand, had no trouble outputting in any of these formats.

Re: .mov (MPEG4-AVC) crash work around
yes, the file is ~around 31 MB in size. The link that I provided results to a review of the camera including some samples
I right clicked the timeline and select insert video, but results in " "Unable to open file [C:\Users\M\Desktop\filename.mov] File format mismatch. [16803:1:3]" again. I am totally lost now since you guys are able to open the file. 12.0.98.1 Pro is the version that I run. Do i miss a patch or additional software (not the correct version of directX or so)?

FWIW, I'm also able to insert the file into VS X2. Your version number is correct. There was only 2 patches issued for VS X2, SP-1, and the last one for WIn7 compatibility.

Can you open Quicktime Player on your computer and tell us the version number -- that's assuming you have Quicktime on your system. X2 only tended to work with the version of Quicktime which came with it, and from memory that may have been version 7.5.5. The same thing with X3, though X4 seems to be more forgiving. Some people still have to install an older version, though as I say I have updated Quicktime to the current version, and it works happily in X4.
