x2 hardware update hasn't any effect

Post by leo_b »

hi,
i'm using psp since version x.
and i'm satisfied with it very much.
from version x to x2 i thought that my actual hardware isn't strong enough to manage it.
so i made an upgrade from single core athlon to dual core intel.
and also the graphic-adapter from very slow to Geforce 8800 GTX.

and ... it's still as fast as before.

so is there any thing i can do to adjust psp or the hardware to improve the working speed?

in addition to that, is there any switch or regkey for supporting gpu usage by psp?

does photoshop use gpu support?

As with anything I post I just want to say, that this response is based on what I've learned. So if I've learned anything improperly then this is mostly bunk. But I don't think I have.

As far as I'm aware Photoshop only started supporting GPU functions in CS4 so it hasn't really been around that long even for them. But that only speeds up some functions, not all of them. Most graphics processing functions are still CPU intensive. You'll also find that size of the image has a direct impact on the speed of the function you're using.

In fact the GPU and OpenGL support is based around the 3D functions of the extended edition, color conversions (16-bit to greyscale and so on), and visual walk throughs (zooming) HUDs (Heads up dispalys) and realtime brush head cursor viewing. The actual editing functions...not so much. I don't mean to make this functionality sound useless because in fact it is very useful but what it does is probably not what you think it should be. One option that photoshop has that I love is the spring-loaded navigation cursor. It allows you to rotate the canvas instead of rotating the image.

This is handy because during regular rotation if you rotate to anything other than 90 degrees you'll actually lose pixels and to rotate it multiple times you'll lose a lot. Rotating the canvas doesn't actually rotate the image. and for those of us who hate painting in certain directions it's wonderful. They have this same thing in Corel's Painter.

And no there is no support for GPU in Paint Shop Pro. But the same rules still apply.

Now being CPU intensive you'd think a dual core would help but as far as I know Paint Shop Pro is not optimized for multiple cores. So unless your individual cores are faster than your original single core processor you won't notice many speed increases. That's what I did. Had a CPU single core with 1.8 Ghz, got a new laptop Dual Core 2.3 Ghz and there was a slight speed increase. Since one of my cores was working at .5 Ghz faster than my original CPU. But the increase was minimal.

And being a 32-bit program having more RAM won't help unless you only have 1GB of RAM. Because Paint Shop Pro can use 2GB.

You might look into decreasing the number of undo options. The default is 250 undo steps available to you and each step is temporarily saved in the background adding to the overall burden of the program. But I doubt it'll help much.

hi LeviFiction,

thx for you long explanations!
you are right thats not the answer i want to read.
but if i know that i can only increase speed by increasing cpu speed and nothing else really, than i can stop searching for other answers.
thanks!

In a publication in a flight simulation related magazine it was found that the simulator which renders from 3D models, which is only capable of single core/thread operations, speeded up about 24% in graphics rendering (done mostly in the CPU) when migrating to Win 7 from VISTA. "Insiders" told the journalist that Win 7 can catch CPU complex math calls and move them to the GPU when cycles are available.

Perhaps this might affect PSPPX3 as well.
