Feel silly.. but how the heck go from project to DVD w/ menu

Post by ilbarbaro »

I'm a noobie. I admit it. Still getting up to speed, but with a trip to Mom and no DVDs of her precious family movie VHS tapes, I'm in a pickle.

I've captured the VHS tapes (previously). I have a project that puts them all into a single timeline. I have background music for each clip.

What is the easiest way to convert a project to a DVD format WITH menu that includes a scene link to each clip like a regular DVD????

I have chapter points set up in the VSP project file, but my first render attempt just seemed to make one big video file and not a structured DVD file with multiple scenes. I cannot figure this out. Apparently, rendering to a DVD file doesn't actually create the DVD structure.

Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully, this is an easy one.

Apparently, rendering to a DVD file doesn't actually create the DVD structure.
No it doesn't. What you have been doing is correct up to a point, but essentially it is only the initial *Editing* phase of making a DVD. Now you have to move on to the next step: 'Authoring' or actually burning/producing a structured DVD. And for that you need to use another program. Up until, and including, Video Studio X2, the authoring/burning module was an integrated part of the program. With VS X3, however, Corel in their wisdome [NOT!] did away with the old burning module and substituted it for a fairly hopeless piece of software called DVD Factory "Pro" 2010. It works, but is incredibly slow and clunky, and prone to crash a lot. So after a lot of complaints, Corel made another program -- a cut down version of their DVD authoring program, Movie Factory 7 -- available as the burning program for X3.

To get that, if you haven't already downloaded and installed it, you click on the circle of dots up in the top right of the X3 screen, and you should get a new screen with Do More and Get More buttons amonst other in the top right. If you click on Do More, you should see a download link to Movie Factory 7 SE. If that doesn't work, then follow this link: http://www.corel.com/akdlm/6763/downloa ... orVSX3.exe

Once you have installed it, you proceed from where you have already arrived at: with a DVD-compatible new video which contains your edited video, but is not yet in a final DVD format. You open MF 7 SE and insert that new file in the burning timeline. Forget about the chapter points you have inserted during the editing phase, and insert new ones in MF 7 SE at the beginning of each chapter you want to have an icon for in your final DVD. Then select a menu template, give all the chapters names, and preview things to make sure it is all OK. Then proceed to the final, burning page. The result should be a proper video DVD with menu, which also allows you to choose which chapter you want to view...

Hello ilbarbaro,

Just an additional suggestion, once you have installed the DVD Movie Factory 7 Se, then you can follow these steps to created a DVD using the program. Answer ID 764534 - How to burn your project in VideoStudio Pro X3 using DVD Movie Factory 7SE.

Thanks for the input!

I did end up figuring it out. I'm actually on X2 and considering moving to X3 with the current upgrade offer.

Ok. I upgraded from the old Video Studio 10 Plus to the Corel Pro 3X. I am now in the process of downloading all the Get More updates. While I am doing this, here is my Menu/Chapter problem. I have checked the online help, and have resorted to this site in the Forum.

1. I created the first video (part 1). I somehow have a main menu, and the the second menu has my chapters to select. Yay! I saved the menu to My Favorites. The DVD works great with you being able to select a chapter to play, etc.

2. Now I am trying to create the second video (part 2). Somehow in My Favorites I have two menu templates from the first DVD I created. I have tried selecting each one and am trying to create a main menu, and then the second menu with 4 chapters. But each time I end up with 4 chapter menus, but I want the second menu to have the 4 chapters on it that you select a chapter that your want to view.

I have no idea what I did the first time. Has anyone created a simple step by step procedure to create a main menu and the second menu has all the chapters on it?

I hate to start from scratch because I like the fonts, etc. from the first DVD, which is part 1. Help!

Hi

I’ll try to explain

1 / When you add a video file (known as Titles) a main menu is created, for each video file added a link or thumbnail is created. Add four video files and you will get a menu containing four Title links.
Next……….
I then choose a template and edit the menu.
When I play the disc I see a main menu containing 4 links, I can play any Title but how the disc reacts is determined by the Navigation Controls, (select the Project Settings Cogwheel-Lower Panel)
This is the approach I take, I do not feel the need for chapter points.

Sub - Menu
2 / You can create Chapter points for each Title
Select a Title / Thumbnail in the timeline and choose Add / Edit Chapters.
Add Chapters ….. This creates a Sub-Menu, one for each Title, containing the Chapter links
Next
Below the preview screen is the option to work/edit the different menu’s ( Currently Displayed Menu’s )

When you play the video the main Title menu is displayed, choose a Title and the chapter menu is displayed allowing you to select a chapter and play the video. Once play has started it will continue to the end of the Title, playing the remainder of the chapter points.

The Navigation Controls mentioned earlier affect the Titles Menu not the Chapter Menu

3 / If you have ONE Title and have created a Sub – Menu containing 4 chapter points then the main menu is of little use and can be hidden. (Edit Tab-Advanced-Add Title Menu) I think this option may be useful.

4 / Saving a menu as a favourite….this is done via the Customise option, once created the template can be applied to your work, but you will still have to create the chapter points, these are not saved to the template.
