Hi all,
I have a Canon DC210 SD digital camcorder, which records onto mini DVD's. The camcorder has no USB, IEEE 1394, connector on it. The only way to get video clips onto my PC is to put the mini DVD into the DVD drive of my PC. The video clips are stored in .VOB format, which is a shell for MPEG2 data. The camcorder records a timecode in the video file, but when I use the Capture/Import from Digital Media function that timecode does not get brought into VS X3. I have searched the forum, and see several articles about timecode imports from DV tape, but I didn't find anything about importing from digital media.
I have tried putting a check in the Add Video Date Information as Title checkbox, but I do not get the timecode in the imported file. Canon assures me the timecode is there ready to be imported along with the MPEG video data, but I can't get at it. I have tried importing directly from the mini DVD, and from the .VOB files saved on my hard drive, still no timecode in the imported clips.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Larry

Hi Larry
As far as I know Mpeg 2 does not support a timecode as such.
DV-Avi type video from a Mini DV Type camcorder does produce a timecode.
You can view the timecode whilst playing the clips, but again when you convert/render to DVD Mpeg 2 it no longer exists.

Hi Trevor,
That is not what I wanted to hear, but half-way expected. Since no one else has stepped up with a solution, I will have to live with things the way they are.
Thanks for your feedback,
Larry

Re: Get timecode imported into VS X3
Can I ask what you want the time code for? There are filters that will put the time code on a video, if that's what you are looking to do.

I just want the time and date that the original clip was shot to display for about 10-15 seconds, so that as time goes by, we can remember when the video was shot. It's not a big thing, but if it can be imported from DV tape, it should be able to be imported from the VOB/MPEG file. I will check out the third party utility mentioned above and see how that works.
If you have any other suggestions, I'd love to see them.
Thanks,
Larry

Hi Larry
Although the DV type time-code can be displayed, when you convert the video to another format (Mpeg2) this option is lost, the time-code no longer shows.
The only way I know of embedding the information is to create a Title.
As I said in my first reply “Mpeg 2 does not support a timecode”
You may be able to use a program to produce one, but you would have to input the information,
it cannot read the existing data as it just doesn’t exist. (in which case you might as well create your own title)
I could be wrong, now I’m doubting myself

Re: Get timecode imported into VS X3
Hi Trevor,
I understand what you mean. All these different standards can make it difficult to keep track. From my side, when I play back the VOB/MPEG files on the camera, the datecode info is displayed right on the screen. It should be there to import along with the rest of the metadata. But, I guess that while anything is possible, it may not be economically viable to go to the extra expense just for a small niche market like my older technology camcorder.
Thanks for all the feedback, guys. It is appreciated.
