Local Tone Mapping or Clarify

Post by Tadjio »

When X3 was released, it came with a 'new' facility called Local Tone Mapping.
It appears to replace the old Clarify and is inded very similar in its effect.

Tim Morrison and Trev Bowden suggested some months ago that Corel renamed
Clarify as Local Tone Mapping because of copyright issues.

Back in the spring, Spandex Rutabaga provided two sample files.
We were asked to compare this with Local Tone Mapping in X3 at maximum setting
up to 20 times in succession to BeforeClarify.png and see if the pattern of blocks
visible in After20Clarify.png develops in the process.

Both Jean-Luc and I concluded Local Tone Mapping is not Clarify with a new name
but a different method of local enhancement.
I found that Local Tone Mapping is increasingly fierce,
whereas at low strengths it is not much different from Clarify.

Attached are example files of my results if anyone is interested.

For those who don't know, Corel still uses Clarify in Scripts,
even though it is not available in the Customization menus.

Thank you for the clarification Tadjio.

Though my test didn't result in quite the same extreme changes that yours did. Local Tone mapping didn't look any different and the script recording of Local tone Mapping did. I am interested in the fact that if Local Tone Mapping does act differently than Clarify and that this wasn't changed in the scripts at all. Especially since Local Tone Mapping is recorded as Clarify in the scripts. *shrug* I guess the difference is small enough that most people won't notice big/bad differences between the actual command and a recorded action but it seems so odd that they would have it that way.

Yet more proof that Corel ignores the importance of scripting and updating the scripting references and they need to get on that.
