.mod import troubles

Post by TheMattMan »

Hello, I am trying to import some video from a friends Cannon video camera and it records its movies in a .mod format. After I import a clip, if I try to play it to sample which file it is, it causes a problem with corel and it has to shut down. If I pull the video into the timeline it plays just fine. I checked my update and everything is up to date with video studio and it says it handles .mod files, but I do not understand why it is freezing then shutting down the program. Any ideas?

Are you asbolutely certain it is a Canon camera? I ask, because as far as I am aware, the only brand cameras that use .mod as their format (or .tod for high definition) are JVC cameras. So that is number one.

Or on the other hand, if they are definitely from a Canon camera, can you confirm that they are .mod and not .mov files... ?

Yea I thought the same thing that it was only a JVC thing but his camera is exactly like my Cannon except mine is the HD version. I will try to post a screenshot that shows they are .mod files.

Hi
All camcorders of JVC,Canon and Panasonic that record mpeg2 files to either HDDs or memory card use the mod format.
I recommend to use my tool sdcopy
http://zyvid.com/smf/index.php?action=d ... 0.0;id=224
It renames/converts the mod files to mpg files and also corrects the missing aspect ratio information of the mod files(16:9 clips will show in 4:3).
As an alternative you can also try to rename the .mod files to .mpg and test whether videostudio will work better with them.

VideoStudio has two types of playback modes in the Advanced Editor, Clip and Project.

When playing in clip mode it will use the default player set by Windows to view the clip, when you bring a clip down into the time-line it is most likely playing in Project mode and that is why you do not receive a crash. When playing in Project mode it is using VideoStudio.

What is the default player for MOD files? can you play the files our side of VideoStudio?

I can't play the .mod files with any of my players, but I tried what Sektionschef had mentioned and renamed one to a .mpg and it plays just fine outside of corel. I didn't import it inside yet, but am confident it will work.

Hi
As mentioned previously just renaming the mod to mpg might show problems with files recorded in 16:9 widescreen format.
In this case my tool sdcopy can correct this by patching the mpg headers to the correct values.

I haven't tried the program to convert them yet... I did a few manually and they all played inside and outside of Corel preview and seem load into the timeline also. I will try your program if it batch converts because there is a large amount of individual clips.

1. I can assure you that the Canon FS100 uses mod/moi files, I've been using them for some time. I too was very frustrated at first until I found SDcopy (many thanks Sektionschef).

2. I'm now on SDCOPY V1.99985, I think there is a later one, but cannot find a link that works (the one above does not). Anyone know where the latest version is?

3. However for anyone else using it I have noticed a 1 hour DST time problem (my latest version is SDCOPY V1.99985).

On my Canon FS100, the video clip gives at time of say AM 11:00, however, when I convert with SDcopy it shows the time as 1 hour earlier AM 10:00. I am sure this is something to do with DST (daylight saving time?).

I thought I was going mad, as when I looked at an old conversion with v1.9997 it had the correct time (I could have changed it manually, but I didn't think so), so I tried again with v1.9997 and it now shows 1 hour earlier!!

Thinking it might be a DST problem, I altered my system date to June (i.e. DST time in the UK), ran both versions of SDcopy and filename has the correct time. It is the same for both XP and win7.

Any chance of a fix (or is there an option already that I've missed)? If not the workaround is either to rename (remove an hour) with some automated program (not sure which), or alter your system date to match when your video was taken.

Hi,

I have a similar issue with my VS10 Plus, whereby the SW will crash during the rendering of the project, which starts every time i try playing the project or creating the image file.
I import .mod files created by a JVC camcorder in standard def.
The odd thing is that in the past i was able to play and create image files with no problem. Now i have continuous problems.
Please see my thread below and see if you have some suggestions:

Many thanks in advance,
