Split large file
I have my editing all done for a 2 hour 12 minute video. It has been my experience that I can get about 1hr 7min. on a DVD. Normally when i'm done editing, I choose Share > Create Video File > DVD. This creates a DVD compatable mpeg-2 file for burning later. I know I want to create 2 seperate DVD's. How do I split the video? Is it possble to slpit in the editing phase? I'm using VS pro 12. Thanks for your help.

You could put 2 hours and 12 minutes on one DVD if you wanted to - but if you really want to make 2 DVD's then proceed as follows :-
First just make a copy of your project file (.vsp) giving it a different name - this is just as a backup in case you do something wrong along the way.
Open the project into VS - move the cursor to approximately half way through your video - use the scissor tool to cut the video - delete the second half - go to 'Share >> Create Video file" and produce your first mpeg2. - 'File >> SAVE AS' giving the project file a slightly different name (add 'A' to the name or similar) - re-open the complete project again - cut in the same place as before - delete the first half of the video - again go to 'Share >> Create Video file" and produce your second mpeg2 with a different name than the first one - 'File >> SAVE AS' giving the project a slightly different name from before (add a 'B' or whatever this time)
You now have projectA.vsp and projectB.vsp with matching mpeg2 to burn your DVDs

Re: Split large file
Ok - a second way which some people prefer
Put the video in the timeline - make sure you are in 'Project' playback - under the preview window is a scroll bar - under the scroll bar are two black triangles - drag the right one to approximately half way along - a red line will appear in the 'ruler' above the time line - this is the selected range - now go to 'Share > Create Video File' and select your required format - in the create video file window where you name the file and folder first click on 'Options' then make sure you select 'preview range' not entire project - render out your first half.
Return to the main eding section and move the right black triangle all the way to the right and then drag the left one to the middle (where the other one was previously) - red line again in timeline indicate selected range - Create Video file as before but this time it will be the second half of you video.
Return to editing tab and drag left black arrow all the way to the beginning red line should dissapear indicating that the whole project is now selected.

Re: Split large file
Hi Brian,
Thank you so much for your help. I had researched this concept in a forum and the only advice was to put your unwanted clips into the video library and then create your DVD. Then put everything from the video library back on a new project. The time involved would be aweful. Again, thank you so much for your help. Take care, Carl
