Yes I fear that it is this particular machine that is "upset" Yes I may have used a sytem cleanup to regain space etc. Is there a way to relaod the correct codecs into XP??

As Tevor and I have alluded to, if your camera came with software that will usually have the required codec.

Hi John

The safest way is to install any software that came with your canon camera.

If you have used a register cleanup program, they usually backup before removing files. You may be able to undo this operation.
We don’t really know what program you have used, to be honest I’m a little out of my depth if it turns out to be the registry.

Many thanks for all your comments, but with regard to the camera and its software, yes it is possible to use this, but this does not explain why the avi files loaded perfectly into VS before i.e. in October, and also why the same files are loading perfectly into VS on another PC. Unfortunately as my restore points back to October are no longer accessible, it seem that, without reloading Xp completely afresh, I am stuck with not being able to use VS with these files at all in the future. It seems obvious the either some software or updates have upset my system and perhaps I will phone Microsoft for more help with restoring my system to an earlier date or perhaps reloading codecs etc. It is a shame no one has investigated this problem thoroughly in the past as, looking back through Ulead's history on the web, this problem is not unique i.e. error code 17101-7-1. It does seem obvious also that it is a system problem and not your software that is causing the difficulties. If I find out the solution I will of course get back to you

John, you still haven't confirmed that you have re-installed the Canon software. It's true, something has upset your computer and you apparently lost the codec that was installed by the Canon software. Re-installing the software should replace the codec. Have you done this?

Hi John

Can you send a small sample video, maybe viewing it may give us some ideas?

Edited, text added

Can you view the Avi compression options on your version of Video Studio.

Share Create Video File-Custom- save type as- Avi files –Options- Avi tab Compression list.
Do you see MJPEG Compressor?

What you may have to end up doing is import the clips into your pc using your Canon software, then convert them to something that plays nice with VS. SUPER is a free converter that reportedly works well.

Hi John

You have confirmed re-installed then canon software, but have you re-installed Video Studio. I am assuming you have, did you use the Clean Install process. Some shared files remain after uninstalling, the clean install is a manual approach to remove these files.

Sorry - Yes I have re-installed VS several times , each time removing it with Perfect Uninstaller which, after removal, scans.the registry and pc for any loose leftover files or entries. I have never used the Canon software as it seems only usable with its own video editor which isn't very good. I normally use the usb port to import the avi filesfrom the sd camera card directly onto the hard drive. I have even tried loading into files into VS straight from the sd card via a usb reader. I have also used Prism codec converter to try changing the avi codecs from MJPeg to several other AVI Codecs, all to no avail. As mentioned previously, the files did load into VS perfectly OK in Octiober, so something has happened since then. Also the files load easily into VS on another PC. My next step is to do a complete repair on XP Pro booting from the XP Pro sytem disc. Hopefully this will reset or re-install any changed, corrupt or missing drivers etc. I have a faint recollection that something called ffdshow was popping up around the time I successfully loaded the files previously but I haven't a clue how to use this again, and it isn't popping up any more.

Hi John

Ffdshow info

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ffdshow

If you have had this file installed your Perfect Uninstaller may have seen the file as a threat or simply not required and removed it.

I don’t normally advice to install additional codecs but in this case maybe its worth a go.

Success, success. After doing a Windows XP REPAIR all AVI files are now loading perfectly into VS Pro x2 and VS Pro x3. Please note that this was NOT a restore nor a re-installation of Windows. It was a repair, carried out by booting up from the original Windows installation disk. Let it progress and arrive at a page where you press ENTER to "Install Windows, i.e.(don't press R" here) On the next page, press F8 to agree to the terms and conditions , on the next page select the appropriate Windows application, then you must press "R" to do the repair. For full details of how to carry out the repair I followed the instructions at http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operating ... epair1.htm.
:D
This essentially replaces all the original Windows settings and drivers back to when Windows was first installed but still retains full usability of all your programs and documents etc.
In order to bring Windows back fully up to date you may have to carry out the necessary Windows updates depending which disk you used to repair Windows. PLEASE NOTE ALSO that it is wise to somehow fully backup your drive e.g. to an external usb drive, BEFORE doing the repair just in case the repair doesn't work and in the rare event of your system installation becoming corrupt However all went very smoothly in my case and although we haven't found the cause of the problem, at least we have found a remedy.

It seems that something, a virus, a downloaded program etc had changed settings on my pc that caused this 17101-7-1 error and prevented these AVI files loading into VStudio. Perhaps in future each time I do an update or download any program, I will immediately do a VS check to see if the files are still loading. You never know, we may eventually find out what caused it all. Many thanks to all who offered their kind assistance during my hour(s) of need. Judging by the number of views to this posting, perhaps I am not the only one experiencing this difficulty, and I hope that the above may be of help to some of them.
