Can't reload VSP project - all AVI clips unreadable
I have previously created a project using avi files and successfully burnt a dvd. Now when I reload the project all the AVI clips on the timeline are "unreadable" (black and white horizontal bands) yet they have not been moved from their original folder and all clips are visible on under "video" on the "edit" page. I have even tried relinking but to no avail. All the clips still play perfectly on Media player. Any ideas please??

Hi John
As you are also trying out the Smart Package, moving files, make sure you have not moved or deleted the Avi clips.
When you see the re-link window, make a note of the original files location.
Browse for that location, do the files exist.?

I haven't moved either the vsp file or the original folder. I am trying to reload the original vsp file from the original folder and all AVI files are where they were when I created the project.

Have the clips changed at all - name, length, etc.?

No - When I reload the project, I just get blck&white bands instead of video clips and when I right click properties I get message "the content of the file is unreadable" yet as I say, the files are OK on Media player and other players

It would be interesting to see if you did, in fact, move the clips, if you would get a re-link message. If you do, try re-linking and see if that fixes it.

Re: Can't reload VSP project - all AVI clips unreadable
Very strange - When I move the clips to another drive and try to relink the AVI files I now get the message "unable to open the file" on all clips.

Re: Can't reload VSP project - all AVI clips unreadable
It seems that for some reason, video studio will not load these files anymore. I've even tried to put the original avi files from the video camera directly into the timeline of a new project and always get the message i.e unable to load or unreadable . I'm beginning to think that some setting is wrong in the program itself. I have attached a a screenshot of the original project which shows that the clips loaded into the library originally but will no longer go onto the timeline. I am also attaching a small avi file to see if this helps.

Re: Can't reload VSP project - all AVI clips unreadable
I think you forgot to attach the screenshot...
What codec does your "avi" files use? There's about 800 different possibilities. Have you recently changed anything that might affect this? Where did the files come from, camcorder, internet? If from a camcorder was it a DV, mini-DV, digital still camera?
I don't think you're able to attach a video clip to the forum. You could trip zipping it, using like WinZip or Zip Genius, and try attaching it. The video clips that you see displayed are actually uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo, and then embedded here using the proper BBCode. However those videos are displayed in FLV.
Since "avi" files, are usually very large, unless you're using some highly compressed format like Xvid or DivX, you would need to upload it to a file sharing site and provide a link so it can be downloaded. Most email services have a limit of around 25Mb for attachments, and 25Mbs of "avi" is not going to be a long enough segment to test.

Hi
Like Ron I think this is a codec problem, but what’s changed. You say the clips play ok using Media Player?????????
What type of Avi, what make and type of camera?
I’ve read the last posts and don’t see what version of video studio you are using???
Have you tried re-installing Video Studio?
Windows Live, has a SkyDrive section that allows you to share files, I think the limit is 50 Mb.
The Messenger part will transfer any size, provided both parties are on line together.
I am willing to look at a sample if we can arrange a download

Re: Can't reload VSP project - all AVI clips unreadable
Even more intereting. I tried loading the project on another pc with Pro x2 loaded and all avi loaded perfectly. So it seems that I have done something on my 1st pc that is affecting Pro x2. One thing I have done recently is to load Pro x3 and I will try to uninstall that and also to re-install Pro x2. I will keep you posted.

Re: Can't reload VSP project - all AVI clips unreadable
Still no luck I'm afraid. I v'e deleted quite a lot but it doesn't seem to make much difference and unfortunately I can't now do a restore back to 7th October when the original project was created without problem. This again suggests that some sort of problem has occurred with the pc although all seems to be working OK except this particular problem with Pro x2 ( nor will these AVI files load into pro x3) The avi files were produced with a Canon Ixus 1s the codec is probably " motion Jpeg: Resolution 640 x 480. frame rate 30" I have at last found some other AVI files on my PC taken with a Panasonic video camera (codec DV Video 750 x 576 Framerate 25. These load perfectly so it seems that it is a codec problem. But why did my Canon AVIs load in OK before? Perhaps we'll never know but surely there must be some way of loading them in again i.e either by converting the files or with a Video plus patch or plug in. Unfortunately I am not well enough up in these fields to know what to do or how to do it . Can you help please ????

Perhaps the codec was removed or became corrupted. Where did the codec come from in the first place? Did your cam come with software that you installed? The avi files were produced with a Canon Ixus 1s the codec
surely there must be some way of loading them in again

Hi John
Regarding your pc, have you installed any Codec packs, these may well cause some problems.
Have you used a pc cleanup facility, maybe scan registry to remove unwanted entries?
The Canon cameras usually come with their own software, installing this may add the correct codecs to your pc.
Again I am willing to view one of your files but as you have successfully used one on another pc, then the problem must be with your setup.
