Split by time

Using VS Pro X3.
Is there a way to split by time (vs. by scene/content)?

Thank you.

Hi
Welcome to the forum

Yes Video Studio can Split by Scene

Select the clip in the timeline , right click-Split by……

Not all video formats support this option, but give it a go.
Mpeg2 and Dv-Avi are ok, I am not sure about HD video.

Unfortunately the cut/split is not that accurate.
One frame being lift over in the adjacent clip makes editing difficult.

Earlier versions worked ok

If capturing Dv-Avi, Split by Scene can be applied during capture, but again with the extra frame problem.

If you are capturing to Dv-Avi then use Win DV to capture.

It’s a pity Corel cant sort this problem

Glad I saw this thread, I was about to start one asking about the extra frame overlap when splitting by scene. I get it when capturing avi from the camera (Sony DCR-HC40), using VS X3. didn't get it when using VS10+. It's aggravating when you change the order of clips. Is Corel aware of the problem? Haven't tried capturing with WinDV, can it split by scene?

Hi David

I contacted Corel support when I first used X2.
They said as nobody else had complained then it cannot be a bug.
It was Corel that used the word Bug

I asked if they could run a test by capturing to Split by Scene,
They said If I rang support they would explain to me how to use the program, at a cost that is.

I don’t particularly like recommending other software, I feel we pay enough for the Corel product for it to work correctly.
But in this case use Win DV, it supports Split by Scene and as an added benifit you can customise the file names.

Like you I found that the earlier VS 10 and 9 worked ok for a while.
But now seems as though they are giving problems, maybe it’s a share file in the Common folders altered with updates.???????

Thanks Trevor!

I've been using VS since version 8 and, in general, like it a lot. Be nice if they fixed this though, after all, it used to work! In the meanwhile I'll give WinDV a try for capturing.

It seems your question got a little side-tracked, and misunderstood..

There's really not a split by time function, unless you're working with DV (avi). Then there's the option of DV Recording Time scan. This uses the date/time stamp placed on the video at the time of recording.

There would be possible work-around, it involves a little work on your part though, and uses the Multi-Trim. Open the Multi-Trim for your clip, then at the top set the time to jump to. You would need to mark-in and mark-out to select a segment. This could be a lot of manual work opposed to having the program do it automatically. But then again I don't trust programs to be that accurate and do cuts exactly where I want them..

Thanks to all for your helpful responses.

My old Pinnacle product did support a "split by scene" and "split by time interval".

The motivation for this question, is my interest in achieving a stop motion or "flip book" effect by extracting a snapshot every .5 seconds and replaying the snapshot (with .5 second interval to maintain the timebase and audio track synchronization).

WinDV allows you to split by X number of frames, which amounts to the same thing as split by time. Just figure out the number of frames in the time you want, and set the split accordingly. Works great.
