File names.

Post by marsheng »

Is there anyway of entering a starting file number for a clip import? Eg uvs101102_123459~0.mpg is just too long for the thumbnails.

No, but this has been addressed before. Do a Search for it or maybe look in the Free Stuff section for renaming programs.

Once you have the thumbnail in your library it is very easy to change the text under the thumbnail (does not change the original filename) - just click twice slowly on the text and it will be highlighted in blue and you can then type a new title - just like renamming a file in windows explorer.

I also very often change the name of the imported file as well in Windows Explorer giving it a meaningful name rather than looking through a load of uvs#### file which give no clue as to what they are - then import the video again into your library so that the thumbnail has the new name then just delete the thumbnails with the uvs names.

Somehow I'm not getting emails for my posts. I'll look into it.

I know how to rename but when I import a Canon DC50 DVD, there can be up to 100 clips. I'm wondering if I can start the import from say file name '2010_11_XXXX'.

Hi Wallace

Are you able to use the Canon software to import the video.
This may give you the option of customising file names.
Then import to Video Studio

Video Studio has always used date numbering to name its files, and yes its about time they provide a more flexible approach.
Having said that you never get two files with the same name.

If you look at the default naming marsheng you will see that they are in fact in date order - and have a sequential number after them - the format is uvs followed by the date in reverse order and then a sequential number - so they are in fact already in order - the only strange thing that goes wrong is when you import a batch of files for some unknown reason VideoStudio puts the first one last and then all the others in the correct order - just move the last one to the front and then they will all be in order.

I'm importing using VideoStudio. The software does date name them but when viewed in the thumbnail view, all I can see is uvs1010.. for everyone. I was hoping to see 2010_07... 2010_06... etc

Alternatively Is there a way to increase the thumbnail size so I can see the full names ?

Is there a way to find the actual record date of the clip? Using VS all I get is the date I saved them to the computer with the clip properties button?

Hi

The thumbnail is too short to display the file name.
The file name is in date order as US standard
You can increase the thumbnail size with the slider top right of the library.
But then you display less thumbnails, yes they are bigger.
The size of your display depends on the resolution of your pc monitor.

Using Dv-Avi types you can display the time-code, time the video was recorded, but not for Mpeg video. (see Settings-Preferences-General tab-Display DV timecode……)

I asked earlier….Are you able to use the Canon software to import the video?........

I'm running VideoStudio 11. I have looked for it before but I can't find anywhere to increase the thumbnail size. No slider on Library.
Is it worth upgrading to the next version ?

I have now set this on so I will see what happens.

Canon did not supply software for video. They gave me Roxio MYDVD which I found to be rubbish. It only works through the USB on the camera and is very slow.

Thanks Wallace

My Videostudio has just developed a new problem. I successfully created a mpeg4 Youtube clip 2 weeks ago but now it crashes after about 2% of rendering. I've tried a few different clips with different MPEG4 output formats but all crash in about the same spot. 'VideoStudio has had a crash, report error ' and closes.

HDV 1080i-50i did not crash and created a 2 minute clip. Interesting !! Any comments.

I briefly tried X3 several months ago but my trial period has ended so I can't try that now to see if the problem goes way. As I did not see much difference in the upgrade and I decided to not go with it.

Something has changed but I'm not sure what. The sound in the HDV clip is really distorted, sounds like it is really been over driven. I had the same thing in the part clips I manged to make before the crashes, but, it was not there 2 weeks ago.

Can the MS mixer have anything to do with it ?

Cheers Wallace.

If it is the same clip that is crashing at the same point I would look at the possibility of a corrupt clip.

Clip Crash using Ipod MPEG-4 640x480 or any other MPEG-4 format

The clip is from a Kodak camera. I used the same clip 2 weeks ago for which I edited and made a Youtube video and all worked ok. Now the same clip crashes at 2% . I recopied the original clip from the camera and had the same problem. I tried a second clip from the same camera, same crash. If I take the clip I made for Youtube, I can create an Ipod MPEG-4 640x480

Both clips however will make a HDV without problems although the sound is really distorted .

If I take a Canon clip I can create an Ipod MPEG-4 640x480 clip without problems.

Very Strange.

After reading a few reviews, it appears that Pro X2 is better than X3. I purchased and downloaded X2 and tried the same clip and Mpeg4 format. It crashed the same as Ver 11.

On another thread, I read about Quicktime issues so I uninstalled my current version and loaded ver 7.6.

Now I can render a movie with MPEG4 but the sound is still very distorted.

Here is the original one I created 2 weeks ago.

Any suggestions ?

I downloaded a free program called Bulk Rename Utility. Looks a bit complicated at first but I did, after trial and error manage to get it to rename/number several hundred clips with no issues.
A previous poster mentions that on importing a number of clips into a library VS ,I use X2 ,seems to place the first numbered clip last with all the others being in order. Do we know why this is and is there a fix, other than moving the offending clip physically up to the top?
