Differences in PSPP X3 over PSP?

Post by poetdoc »

I've used PSP 8 for years with much success. My company wants me to upgrade, and I know nothing about anything past version 8 and the Corel buyout. My question: Is the PSPP series a complete rewrite that doesn't have the features the old PSP used to have, or does it contain the same features as before plus? I'm downloading the trial now, but I was wondering if there was anybody else in my shoes, or any documentation that compares the "old" with the "new." Thanks!

As far as I'm aware it's all of the same stuff plus more. At least it is compared to version 9 which is where I started.

There are a few things they replaced or changed or renamed. I don't have a complete list though.

And if they don't appear to have something you enjoyed, it's probably hidden in the unused commands section of the customize dialog. (View->Customize)

Though I can't say for sure if they've gotten rid of anything permanently. But I don't think they have.

Thanks! I've looked at the trial version, and it looks like everything's there, just not where I'm used to.

Hello poetdoc,

As far as I know there have been little changes made since Corel acquired PSP. The only changes that they made are introductions of new features like the HDR Photo Merge and the graphite themes. But to my knowledge there has been no changes at all. So if you're an advance user of the old PSP, then you won't have any problem switching to the latest version.

If you do need help, PSP has a lot of Video Tutorials, Online resources and community like this one that you can use as your reference.

Well there are a few differences between the versions, and just because a tool is called the same thing doesn't mean it works the same. Usually if it works a little different it's improved in my opinion.

One example is Clarify is now called Local Tone Mapping, and it doesn't produce as much banding as I used to see in PSP X or PSP 9.

If there was a tool that you really liked yet you can't find it in the newer version you can add it back into the program. Click View > Customize (bottom of the menu). On the Commands tab under Categories click Unused Commands (or All Commands). In the Commands column find the tool your looking for and click and drag that command to the exactly where you want to see it at in PSP itself.

Please note that some tools that were 8 bit only tools that were replaced by 16 bit tools will still be 8 bit tools if you bring them back to life. Grey World Color Balance is one example of this. It was a pretty simple slider type color balance adjuster, however if you're working on a 16 bit Tiff the program will ask you to convert it to an 8 bit file first, losing a lot of information.
