I have been using VS12 on my desktop, to create small family videos, for over a year now. Until the day before yesterday all worked fine but suddenly when I played back the video I was editing the picture was black and only the sound played. Further analysis showed that the failure applies to all mpg files but wmv, avi and uvp files all display correctly.
The only recent change that I could associate this problem with was an update to Mozilla Firefox, which I think may have also prompted an update to Adobe Flash Player.
Yesterday, when I opened Firefox another automatic update took place and when I re-opened VS12 it all worked as it should. A few hours later I attempted to use VS12 and the problem once again prevented me from editing my video. I've tried re-booting and I've uninstalled and re-installed Adobe Flash Player. I recall having had problems with codecs in the video editing package I used previously - I have k-lite mega codec pack 2.2.5 installed. Yesterday I also installed the ffdshow codec pack to see if that made any difference but VS12 still would not display mpg files. I left it overnight and tried again this morning but it still won't work.
Have you any idea what else I can do? I am reluctant to unistall and re-install VS12 for fear of losing the links to all the photographs and video clips that I've built up ove the last 17 months.

Re: VideoSrudio 12 file display problem
Is there any particular reason that you installed the k-lite pack, apart from the possibility that it may have sounded like a good idea at the time? I ask, because more often than not, those mega codec packs are more trouble than they are worth, particularly the k-lite one. Their contents are thrown together with the only criterion being quantity, with no thought given to quality. More often than not, some of the included codecs clash either with each other, or, more importantly in this case, with codecs installed either by the operating system or with installed programs such as Video Studio.
Don't get me wrong. Codec packs can perform some useful functions, but as I have done, you have to know which particular codec or codec your are after, and install only those out of the whole pack...
So as a starting point. I would totally uninstall k-lite, then reboot and try X2 again...

Re: VideoStudio 12 file display problem
Thanks for the quick response. I installed k-lite to resolve problems with Windows Movie Maker, which I used prior to VS12. It did help then and I never uninstalled it. I have uninstalled both k-lite and ffdshow and rebooted but unfortunately it hasn't made any difference to the problem with VS.
Any other ideas?

Video Studio X2’s library manager can export the library, effectively creating a copy. (Tools Library Manager)
You would then be able to Clean Install VS, when done Import the saved library.
It may be worth exporting the library now, then restoring the library to its default state, just in case you have corrupt files in the library.

Re: VideoStudio 12 file display problem
Thanks Trevor. I didn't know you could do that. Unfortunately though, it didn't resolve the problem. I've now uninstalled VS and re-installed it, after rebooting the system, but still none of the mpg files will display. I've tried loading a new mpg file to the library and the same happened. I've also noticed that the file preview on the open video file screen behaves in exactly the same manner, ie. when I click preview I can see the still image in the small preview pane, but when I press the play button I hear only the sound and the preview pane goes black.
It makes me think that its using a shared file somwhere that's corrupted - any ideas how to progress from here?

Re: VideoStudio 12 file display problem
After my last response I decided to do some general housekeeping on my PC and uninstalled a number of programs I no longer use. I used a PC tidy up utility as well, which cleaned up the registry. After rebooting I opened VS12 and everything worked perfectly. I managed to edit my video for a couple of hours last night. Now today I've just started up my PC again and opened VS and the mpg files once again won't display.
I was sure I'd done nothing else that might have caused VS to fail but then remembered that during one of the uninstalls a message prompted me to close program F. I thought it must have thrown a wobbly because I didn't have a program called F but when I looked in task manager there was a program F running. After rebooting I looked again and sure enough program F was running again. I obviously stopped it before I used VS last night but had forgotten that. I've just checked task manager again and found that program F was running again. I stopped that and re-opened VS and it works again. Could it be Program F that's causing the problem? I've no idea what it is or where it came from. I've tried searching on the internet to gain more info but cannot find anything to help me identify what it is. I obviously want to uninstall it but it doesn't appear on the Add/remove programs listing nor is it in all programs. I just don't know where else to look. Any ideas greatfully received.

Re: VideoSrudio 12 file display problem
Hi Jackie
I have no idea about Program F, maybe others on the forum could help here.
There is a program called Windows Defender, installed on Vista and W7 but available as download for XP, maybe worth running and scanning the pc.
There is a section under Tools called Software Explorer, I think you can disable start-up programs here.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/produc ... fault.mspx
As a say I have never heard of Program F, if it were a virus then a Google would identify it, but like you I find nothing.
