Flash keeps upgrading without notice

Post by AussieTX »

I have found that the latest version of Flash makes some of the older flash files from VS9 jerky or causes them to stall altogether.
To fix this I simply use the Flash removal tool from Adobe and install version 10.0.45.
Magically all my old Flash files have movement again.
Trouble is every couple of days Flash somehow updates itself back to the current 10.1.something and the old files stop working again.
Is there a way to stop Flash from updating automatically?
I have found how to stop the auto notification but I don't get notification and the bloody thing just seems to update on its own.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Cheers

You can easily stop Flash from auto-updating, once you know how to modify the Windows "start-up" configuration.

Windows keeps a list of programs to automatically start up at boot time, that run constantly in the background. When you install Flash (or pretty much any Adobe program), Adobe puts an "auto-upgrade" program into the start-up configuration. All you have to do is run a utility that can modify the start-up configuration, and use it to disable the Adobe auto-upgrade program.

In Windows XP, the built-in utility is called "msconfig", which you invoke using the Run" feature. I'm afraid I don't know what the built-in Windows 7 equivalent is. No matter. There are several freeware programs available that can do the same thing, including "ccleaner" (aka "crapcleaner" and which I consider a must-have on every PC anyway). Just Google ccleaner and download; you'll get the Win7 version automatically.

As a general rule I disable ALL the auto-upgrade programs, not just Adobe's. I'll choose what and when to upgrade, thank you very much. And you'll get the nice side effect of improved system performance, from not having all that junk constantly running in the background. Just be careful about what you disable; lest you lose functionality you really want. When in doubt, don't disable it. But the Adobe stuff is pretty obvious.

Hi

I think Windows Defender has an option to disable start-up programs.
This program is installed on Vista and I assume on Windows 7.

It is available to download for XP
