Burnt DVD - losing edges of picture.

Post by derekhughes »

I have burnt a DVD from an .mpg file. The file itself play fine in VSX2PRO as well as computer media players.
The burnt DVD plays fine on the computer as well.
When I play it on a DVDplayer & TV I lose about 6 or 7 percent of the picture edges all the way round.
I have tried it in 3 different DVD player/TV combinations with same results.
I have tried burning with VS itself & Nero - same results.
It is relevant as the file is of still with text that goes very close to the edge

Any ideas - it sounds like something simple I am missing?

Thanks
Derek

Hi Derek

What you are describing is the “overscan” effect that all TV sets have.

Most all tv sets loose upto 10% of video around the edges. Normally we do not notice when viewing video, but images cropped tightly become annoyingly noticeable.

Viewing your video on a computer are not affected by “overscan” the whole frame being displayed.

When using Video Studio, creating a Title shows a rectangle within the preview screen, this is known as the “Safe Area”. Outside this area can be affected by overscan. Yes it does look quite large.

The fix is not to crop your images as tight, now you are aware I doubt if you will have further problems.

Slide shows, I create a 10% black border around the image, most of which is lost in the overscan, the remainder is not that noticeable. After-all we don’t have to fill the entire screen with an image, a Picture in Picture affect works well.

Thanks - I knew about the overscan on CRT TVs but did not realise it applied to LCD as well.
I've found the '1:1 Pixel' setting on the HDMI inputs and all is well, but will have to remake the video so everyone can see it. (it is text over stills & the text went right to the edge so got chopped by the overscan)

Thanks again
