best youtube format

Post by dmz »

Greetings,
I am looking for how to configure an output file in the best possible format for uploading to youtube using VS X2. The youtube tutorial here is a bit out of date.

My input file is as follows:

PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 16:9, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

I have been creating an mpg file but I think its better to create an mpeg4 file as it is smaller and quicker to upload I think. I also want to maintain the 16:9 format.

I found the following recommendations on the youtube website:

YouTube can accept almost any video format for upload, but for most users we have found the following settings give the best results.

Video Format: H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 preferred
Aspect Ratio: Native aspect ratio without letterboxing (examples: 4:3, 16:9)
Resolution: 640x360 (16:9) or 480x360 (4:3) recommended
Audio Format: MP3 or AAC preferred
Frames per second: 30
Maximum length: 10 minutes (we recommend 2-3 minutes)
Maximum file size: 1 GB

My first question is - X2 has a builtin mp4 "creator". Is this one OK or is the one downloaded and installed from divx.com better?
What should the frame size be?
On the compression tab what should the video settings be?
As my input file is 25fps does that mean that my output should be the same even though youtube recommends 30fps?

Thanks

David

Hi David

You are using widescreen 16:9 and should keep this aspect.

The X2 Mpeg 4 options seem to create 4:3 frame sizes. (640 x 480)
Using these will sit the 16:9 inside a 4:3 resulting in black bars top and bottom.
I cannot find any options for HD Mpeg 4 which would use 16:9.

Try the WMV HD 720 25p (1280 x 720) option will probably be larger than Mpeg2

FLASH…. again X2 uses 4:3 so you would have to use Make Movie Templates Manager to create a 16:9 template. Custom frame size to 1024 x 576.
File sizes are much smaller than Mpeg 2

Quick Time
Can be configured for 16:9, but larger than Mpeg 2

Avi-Mpeg4 compression looks useful.
Choose Custom-Avi-Options-Avi tab-choose Microsoft Mpeg4 compression, renders quick, about half size of Mpeg2.

Avi-DivX is a little smaller than Avi-Mpeg4

Whichever you choose, as far as I know the upload is converted to flash by You Tube.

I have a variety of formats on you tube, but cannot decide which is the best????????

When you have completed a few tests let us know which option you prefer.

That is correct. That is why I always upload the highest quality video that will fit within YouTube's size requirements. Since you are using DV-AVI I would render the project to a DV-AVI file and upload that. Then it is only converted once.

are you sure they are all flv ?? Re: best youtube format

If someone uploads an HD file (either 720 or 1080) I can directly download it as a mp4 from Youtube.

If I choose to download a lower res I get an flv file

That means they probable store or stream the HD mp4 file.

I don't see why the would discard your upload and the reconvert to mp4 if you download a 1080 HD video.

I didnt really want to render it to the avi format because the file is too large. I was hoping that I could reduce the file size by going to mp4 instead of mpeg2. It seems as though the mp4 option wont allow 16:9 so that is out. How do I get avi-mpeg4 with ms-mp4 compression? is that where I select avi as the output file and mjpeg as the compression option?
Also, I installed divx but cant seem to select it as the rendering engine from within x2.

thanks

Hi David

Avi is just a container, an envelope holding the video……….

For flavours of Avi
Share Create video File-Custom
Choose AVI as the Save as Type
Choose “Options”
Avi Tab
Compression type to Microsoft Mpeg4

For Div X

Same as above but select Compression as Div X
Configure
Then change the Profile
720HD Profile should provide for widescreen 16:9. (1280 x 720)

Flash would probably be the smallest.
Choose Flash as the Save as Type
In the General tab User Define the frame size to widescreen. (Pal 1024 x 576) or 9 1280 x 720)

Using Make Movie Templates Manager in a similar way will create a template available from Share Create Video File. (adjacent to Custom)

Run a few tests with a 1 minute video file, to gvie ideas of file sizes.

I dont think it matters what format you upload to YouTube. My feeling is YouTube converts it to FLV or flash Video format.

I use X3 and save as a HD720 WMV file then use my divx converter to convert to hd720 DIVX simply for file size for upload.

With X3 their is an MP4 option but I have found it a little unreliable (crashing X3).
My You Tube Channel:
My Vimeo Channel:
SONY MOVIE STUDIO PLATINUM HD 10, Corel Video Studio X3, Corel Draw Graphics Suite X4 (Draw, Paint), Adobe Photo Shop CS4, Adobe Bridge CS4, DivX 8, Irfranview, FRAPS, Deamon Tools, VLC, MyDefrag, Nero, AVG, Winamp, Autopano, VMware...

Hi

Accolades---I agree with you, it doesn’t really matter what file type we use but we all have our preferences.
X3 has more options to choose from than X2 as there is no 16:9 option for MP4. (unless I am missing something)

But if you want a smaller file size then you have to convert.
Running a few tests soon shows which renders quickly, the file sizes and quality.
Its also a good learning curve, using the various tools.

I don’t understand why you don’t convert directly to Div X rather than using the WMV step???
If it works then thats all that matters.

Unfortunately HD quality and small file size just don’t go together.

I’ve used MP4 to you tube with no problems, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL-iQJmD2tA) my uploads are a mix, haven’t really settled of one particular option

Thanks again.
I think Ive found a problem. When im in the avi tab and look at the compression options I only have three:
dv video encoder type 1
dv video encoder type 2
mjpeg

I do not have microsoft mpeg4 or divx (even though divx is installed)

Also, where to you change the profile? Or does that only come up if you select divx.

So now Im wondering why I dont have all the compression options.

Cheers

Hi David

Relating to windows 7, there was a problem with VS displaying the Next button in the authoring stage.
I think the problem also affected other icons, cogwheel etc.
Whether this affected the list of templates I do not know.
Corel provided a fix http://corel.custhelp.com/app/answers/d ... 4/r_id/166
---------------------------------------
Have you installed Corel updates---Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 Service Pack 1
http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 7273776985
------------------------------------------
Direct X

Have you manually updated Direct X, this has cured some strange problems with Video Studio.
There is a post at the top of this forum with a link to Direct X download.
Use the DirectX Redist (June 2010) option.
Download, extract files, install by running DXSETUP.exe

Other than that I do not know what else to suggest, maybe others on the forum have come across this.

Div X, the profile options show from a Div X window after selecting Div X configure.
Unfortunately you cannot see these options.

Thanks heaps Trevor.
I already had X2 SP2 and I installed the june2010 directx redist. Unfortunately I still do not get any more compression options.
SO I guess Im stuck with mpeg2 files.

Thanks

Hi David

Now I may be clutching at straws here, but some users had problems when creating templates, or rather retaining the new template.
Each time a template was created it disappeared from the list after re-starting VS.
It turned out to be a file having Read Only properties, and I have no idea which files to look for.
As I said, clutching at straws.

Maybe a Clean Install is on the cards.

Another possibility is that the current version of divx I have only allows you to use the converter for a trial period. Im thinking that the converter is like the rendering engine and wont show up in X2 until you pay for it. Im not big on reinstalls though - Id lose all my customisation..

Thanks

Hi David

The basic Div X is a free download and shows in video studio allowing you to create Div X files. The converter is additional, obviously with additional features as you have to purchase.

Besides I see about 12 + different Avi compression options.

I installed X2 on my notebook and I did have more than three options - but not the Microsoft Mpeg4. A reinstall might do it but I really dont wan t to lose all my settings. I might just have to live with it u8ntil I can find a sneaky technical solution.

Cheers
