MPG file coming up black for trimmed portion

Post by cdoughertycd »

I am using Pro X3 with Windows 7. I opened up MPG video I captured from HD Canon camera yesterday, then trimmed it from the original size to get one portion before dragging it down to the video track. It ran very slow that way, so I dumped the project. Thought if I opened up the original file (11 GB), it would be fine and I could start over but cut it from the video tract rather than the clip, but now the portion I had trimmed is blacked out for video on the original "raw" MPG file but the audio is there. I tried it numerous times. On the thumbnail for this original clip, there is the video icon in the left upper corner but also two little video icons next to that. What did I do wrong? and what do the two extra video icons mean?

When I pull the same original (raw) MPG file up in Windows Live Movie Maker it is fine.

thanks for your help.

Hi Candy

Welcome to the forum

A little more info on the video type would help, right click a clip and select properties, what are they?

When you add a HD video to the timeline a Proxy file should be created, this takes a little time , so be patient.
It will improve playback speeds.
View the details from Tools-Smart Proxy Manager to make sure that a proxy file has been created, one of the icons on the thumbnail does indicates this.

Other icons may indicate that filters have been applied to the clip.
If yes then this may be the reason for black clip????
Select the clip in the timeline, choose the “options” lower right then the Attributes Tab –A small grey box shows any filters applied, hit the X to remove.

Trevor: Thanks for your reply
Video type (properties) are:
file format: MPEG-2
fize size: 11,700,632 KB
Duration: 3773.207 sec
Video type: MPEG-2 Video, Upper Field First
Total frames: 113,083
Attributes: 24 bits, 1440 x 1080 16:9
Frame rate: 29,970 frames/sec
Data rate: 25000 kbps
Audio type: MPEG Audio Layer 2 Files
Total samples: 181,113,914
Attributes: 48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
Layer: 2
Bit rate: 384 kbps

I went from Settings to Smart Proxy Manager
"Enable Smart Proxy" is checked
I'm afraid I don't know what to look for in the Settings to go further, can you direct me?

I selected the clip with the properties above (just one clip I have), went to Attributes but there are no grey boxes showing filters applies.

thanks for your help.

Trevor: Forgot to mention, I'm good at doing print screens and popping them into Word or Powerpoint so I can point to stuff with questions, but for this forum would that work if necessary?
thanks,

Hi Candy

With Smart Proxy enabled, any new clip inserted to the timeline will have proxy files created, these should show in the Smart Proxy Manager, a small icon will be displayed on the thumbnail.
For clips already in timeline, right click and select Create Smart Proxy File.
The progress can be seen from Smart Proxy Queue Manager.

Your video file at 62 minutes 11 Gb is quite large, creating a Proxy file will take some time, be patient.

Print Screen.
Alt + Prt Sc will copy the working window.
Paste to an image editor and save the image.
To the lower part of the Reply Window is a Attachments tab, allowing you to upload the image.
I have only used this option once so have little experience.

By the way have you applied the update patch/s available from the corel web site

Ken: I made a Word doc (extension .docx) and also a pdf of it but both are not allowed as attachments. What kind of file can be allowed, do you know? What program would be an image editor? sorry not familiar with that term, I'm good at Powerpoint, Word, etc.

Thanks for your patience with me.

Hi Ken: I figured out how to save a Powerpoint file to a jpg, so the attachment is my illustration of how I did the trim and what the thumbnail looks like with the little double icons for Proxies, that I think might be causing the portion I trimmed to be black now in the "raw" file. When I add the "raw" file to the thumbnails to start over, the trimmed portion remains black but the audio exists. In Windows 7 Live Movie Maker the raw file is ok.

thanks again for your help.

Hi Candy

Thanks for the image, If you were to use a photo editor, Paint for instance you would be able to Alt+ PrtSc then Paste to Paint saving the image as a file to be uploaded to the forum.
If you find PP is ok for this process then use that.

I notice your timeline is displaying the clip as FileName, from Settings -- Preferences changing this to Thumbnail only will display the clips content. Does this show as black or as frames ?????????

Ok

There are a few ways to trim a clip, the results being the same so I don’t think using other methods will cure the problem.
You could try using the scissors to cut the clip into two, then delete the unwanted portion. Simply navigate to a point to cut and hit the scissors rather than dragging the trim handles. Some details on using the trim handles can be seen here, http://lata.me.uk/corel_guide/Blue%20Bar.htm

Thumbnail icon
The icon shows that a proxy file has been created, from Settings view the Smart Proxy File Manager.

Candy…When you play the original clip are there any problems?
Does the cut clip play ok, even though the thumbnail displays as black?

Trimming clips.
The clips are simply thumbnails, a virtual clip representing the video on the hard drive.
Cutting/trimming does not affect the original file.
Dragging the trim handles back to the ends will replace the frames and show the original.
I normally trim the clip from the timeline rather than the library.

Trevor, I went into Settings - Preferences and changed it to Thumbnail only but black frames still show when original file is dragged to the timeline. When I play the original clip outside of Pro X3, it is fine, no black section. Also I right clicked on the thumbnail and clicked on "single clip trim" and it plays ok there but when I go back to the thumbnail the section is black again. weird. The double icons for proxy files in the thumbnail might mean something?
Here's illustration of the single clip trim I looked at (not sure if this illustration will work, I'll see)

Trevor, more info I noticed. Because this project is just one long clip so far, when I drag it down to the timeline and play it as a clip, it works fine, but if I play it as a project, it has the blacked out section, and Corel is crashing when it gets to that point.

thanks for your help.

I found out when I am capturing video, if I capture in small clips about 5-10 minutes maximum length, I am not having the black video with audio problem. I am using a Canon CMOS HD camera. Long clip files are huge 8-12 GB. As I am capturing, I stop capture in shorter lengths. I am relieved to figure this out. Might be my computer's limitations. I was ready to chuck Corel ProX 3 and use Windows Live Movie Maker that doesn't have this problem, but Corel can do so much more with much better timeline. I have not had Corel crash yet doing it this way, although the video I am editing has sound embedded. In prior video edits I have had a problem with Corel crashing with videos that include a music tract, so I click "save" at least every 1-2 minutes to not lose data.

There is, of course, not a fixed rule out there that you absolutely have to use Video Studio to capture -- though I can think of no real reason why it doesn't work properly in your case. A lot of us use a wide variety of programs in any one editing project. For capturing DV/AVI, I have for several years used a small freeware program called WinDV (http://www.windv.mourek.cz) which is an efficient, tiny program which is very good at what it does. It splits by scene during capture, which is what I want (though VS has long been able to do this). I can also name the files from the start the way I want them, instead of VS's rather opaque naming system. Then I simply open the captured files in VS for editing. You can of course use Windows Movie Maker for capture (making sure it is set to DV and not WMV), and then do your editing in VS... For HDV video, which is what you are capturing, I use HDV Split, another small, freeware program, and again I do it precisely because it can split incoming HDV by scene, which VS cannot do.

As for your computer not being up to the task of capturing DV or HDV properly, that is far from the truth. DV captured as DV requires very little by way of computer resources as it is merely copying exactly what is on the camera in the same format and in real time. When I first started using VS with version 7 quite a few years ago now, I was using a Pentium III, and had no trouble at all... So your Core 2 Duo is more than powerful enough... As for |HDV, it is really the DV of the HD world, and again requires little by way of computer resources to achieve. Certainly even a moderate Pentium 4 could do it, so again your Core 2 Duo would have no trouble at all...
