I have a PC with Quad-Core H2C liquid cooled processors, 8GB ram using 64bit OS, 2 TB hard drives, dual nVidia GeForce 8800GTX cards running in SLI.

I still get jerky videos and have to use Smart Proxy to edit and preview.

P.S.Just for reference, as I just solved a problem I have been having for a few days. I just had to take out a scene in MOV format taken on my iPhone 4 as it crashed every time it got to this point when rendering, the rest that are in AVCHD render fine.

I've had the same issues with .MOV files created from either a friend's Creative VadoHD or my Canon T2i. I've had continuous crashing problems with VSPX3 with these files in the timeline. A faster computer helped, and VS still chokes a bit on AVCHD files when you stack 3 or 4 timelines with them (for multi-camera editing - not the ideal way to do this, BTW Corel). But I found this person's information very helpful and downloaded a trial version of Cineform Neoscene and converted the .MOV files and now VSPX3 runs them smooth as glass. (http://www.learningdslrvideo.com/). Dave Dugdale also talks about the new version of Sony Vegas Pro 10, which he says does support the .MOV files natively, so I would expect that the next version of Corel VS should as well. Here's hoping they do, but in the meantime converting the .MOV files is the only answer to smooth, less-crashing, editing.

I think there's no way around paying out for Neoscene, I too downloaded the trial version and I could actually watch the pre rendered time line smoothly! It is advertised for $129, but when I tweeted this I got a response from someone out there that if you Googled it you could find it for $99, so I did, and here's the link http://www.videoguys.com/Item/CineForm+ ... 454E4.aspx for all of you who are interested.

The weird thing is is that I was at a Canon show yesterday in London, and asked some Canon people whether there was any cheaper or free software for converting 5D files, and he told me they used Mpeg Streamclip on their macs. Well I had Mpeg streamclip on my laptop already downloaded for stock video stuff when I was converting AVCHD. He told me you could convert to AVI in there. So when I got home I checked the various options again and there it was - Cineform HD. Excellent I thought, so I tried testing it - it either crashed or said 'Compression error'. I spent an hour altering all the settings (interlace, quality, sound, progressive, HDTV, unscaled etc...) but nothing made a difference. I did some looking on forums and several people who were successful complained of Mpeg rendering the files 3-4 times the size of Neoscene, and 3-4 times the time, and that the colour was strange. Well $99, that's about £60-£70, just to put an end to this I am just going to buy it.

Check out this post by Dave Dugdale in using Streamclip: http://www.learningdslrvideo.com/pre-re ... t2i-files/

Basically, you have to convert it to an AVID file and not CineformHD. Here's the short version.

After you download the program for Windows, extract it to a directory you like and then click on the executable.
Then if you are like me and don’t have the Avid QuickTime Codec, you can get it download it.
The rest of the instructions I found from Tom Mueller on Vimeo.
File, Export to Quicktime
Choose Avid DNxHD.
Click Options button
Color levels RGB
Click the tiny sliver of a box at the bottom of the window (this is a bug). It will allow you to select the bit rate for DNxHD. Select 1080/24p DNxHD 175 10-bit. Or select 1080/24p 115 8-bit. Experiment with both.
Hover over the Uncompressed selection and the OK button will appear. This is another bug. Click OK.
Set quality to 100%
Uncheck Interlaced Scaling
Select 1920×1080 unscaled
Click “Make Movie”

I know it seems like a few extra steps (and like I posted before I haven't tried Streamclip yet), it does save the expense. Don't know if you can batch convert - that alone might be worth the $99. Still, Streamclip might be the work-around.

Hi

A little update, I own a 7D canon camera which I assume produces the same type of video as the 5D.
In the past I have been able to render my video to various formats without problems.

Today ran a few more tests and Video Studio crashed every time, using Batch Convert also crashed.
Knowing that I have the latest version of Quick Time installed I decided to uninstall and install the version provided by Corel.

I continued the rendering tests without problems. No Crashes.

I rendered to :-

Mov Photo Jpeg …..1280 x 720
DV-Avi ……..720 x 576 x 16:9
Mpeg2 ……...720 x 576 x 16:9
Mpeg 4 H264 ..1920 x 1080
Mpeg4.avi…....1920 x 1080
Bluray………

I do not have a solution as to why I seem to have success and others have all the problems.
I assume 7D video is identical to 5D, I am willing to try your video files if you can provide me with a sample.

I am definitely going to go with Neoscene now, as I have wasted the last second of my time mucking about with all these settings. I could have bought it 3 times over with the time spent not working. I downloaded the Avid codec and it successfully converted the files. Although they did get converted the audio was out of sync. I again tried several settings and couldn't get the audio sorted. I thought maybe they would render in sync in X3 pro, but they crashed in the preview before I could even get to the render stage. With neoscene I just add all the files, leave them converting, then when I put them in X3 pro they work like a charm.

Thanks for all your help people.
