Help with Output file

Post by Roadgiant »

I wonder if anyone can help me, I have been asked to provide some video footage by the sports team I am involved in. and I am a bit lost as to what format the file should be in.
I normally shoot footage using my Canon MD235 onto DVtape, return home capture the footage using either VS12 or VSPROX3 output the file as MPEG-2 Video and then create a Dvd from the output file with no problems.
I have been asked to provide some footage and upload it with thew following brief :-

? 3-4 minutes of action to be uploaded by chosen clubs each week
? Fully uncompressed footage would be ideal, this should give a file of between 1GB – 1.5GB.
? If a file this size is not possible, our minimum standard would be High Quality 64 (H.264)
? The compressor used must be Apple Pro Res 422 friendly – if older edit systems are being used it
may be possible to use the Mpeg Stream Clip application to convert files to be Apple Pro Res 422
acceptable, this application is available at http://www.squared5.com
? Frame size should be 720 x 576
? Footage should be anamorphic or if not possible 1024 x 576
? Audio preferably equalised at -12db

Can some one help me as to what settings I should use for the project/output file to meet this spec or do I need to say that my equipment isn't good enough for this ? The only mention on VS I can find of H.264 is on the create file menu is under Blu-ray and under MPEG 4, Ipods and PSPs

Just been digging around and found that I under create video file there is the option to save as MPEG 4 with the options under the compression tab of video type of H.264-Baseline or H.264 - Main is this the options I need to use?
Many thanks in advance, please ask if you need any more info
Thanks in advance RG

I'll try and answer this:

Out of your camera the best you can give them is DV-AVI (Type 1). So don't capture to mpeg2 which is a lower resolution than the DV-AVI.

At 3-4 minutes per clip there should be no problems with files size but check it.

The Apple pro-res 422 to me sounds like a broadcast quality compressed file probably only available as an out-put in something like Final Cut Pro. Basically what they are after, in essence, is a high res quicktime (.mov) video file. I don't work much in this format except in low res versions which I know something like a Pro-sumer level NLE like VSX2 (or 3) is capable of.

Your camera needs to be set to shoot at 16:9 which should be anamorphic anyway if within the 720x576 frame size

Try that baseline h.264 ( I have never used this codec) and check the quality and file size and compare with the DV-AVI...but you'll need to start from DV-AVI and not mpeg2 from the camera. You might need to tweek the frame size output to accomodate the anamorphic 16:9 originally shot. I can't remember the typical/acceptable 16:9 frame sizes when outputting to .mov files but tables are available on the net (google search), In other words when outputting to .mov you will need to set the frame size to 720 x ???? (which ever is the 16:9 size)

Thanks for the reply Clevo, I'll have a go at the weekend and let you know how I get on.I have a bit of time before the footage may be needed so will do some experimenting. I must admit one of the biggest problems to overcome is the lighting in the venue, which is of the Tungsten variety and very difficult to get the camera set upto overcome this, but that's a complely different issue!!

Just to add to Clevo’s reply.

When capturing from a Mini-DV type camera you should use DV-Out via Firewire as the connection to the pc.
From the VS capture window select DV as the “capture format”
