Adjusting Audio for capturing

Using VS9, capturing video from a VCR. How are we supposed to adjust audio input levels when there's no graphic VU meters? Why would something like that be absent from the capture pane?

So far I've been having to guess at the level, then capture, then play the video back to check, adjust input level again, re-capture, etc etc.

Are the level meters hidden somewhere?
