What I did when I needed something similar was:

1. Start a new project a and put a color clip on the timeline. I chose the bright green clip - because you will be keying this out.

2. Next I selected a font that game me a nice, round, fat "O". I made it fairly large and centered it on the screen. I made the "O" red.

3. I then captured the project as an image. I did it this way so I could easily resize it and stretch its duration.

4. Once you have the image of your red "O" on a green background, you import that image onto an overlay track of your soccer project, keying out the green so only the "O" shows on the soccer vid. Resize and move as needed to highlight the player.

Some people ask how to have the highlighter follow the player. While it can be done, it is very tedious as you need to adjust its location for nearly every frame. That's 25 or 30 adjustments per second of video! What I do, if the player is fairly static at one point you can highlight the player for a second or two. The human brain will then lock on to the person and follow them, even without the red circle around them. Or, if its in the middle of a play in motion, I will freeze the frame for a second or two, highlight the player, then let the video roll without the highlight.
