Ulead Video Studio SE DVD
I have a copy of Ulead Video Studio SE DVD (i think it is version 10 but i am not sure -cant seem to find out for sure). This was supplied with a video capture device (EzCAP USB 2.0 Video Grabber) about 3 years ago. I have been running it fine for ages on 2 XP machines and even a Vista laptop for a while and been getting pretty good results. Recently though I have been experiencing operational problems with the software. Firstly it suddenly stopped working on the Vista machine, which i put down to some compatibility issue with Vista/7. I then went back to using it on an XP desktop which had recently been upgraded to SP3 (had run the software on SP2 previously). The software now crashes as soon as it is opened . After several attempts to get it to work including reinstalling the software i looked into getting an update or patch from the support website. The update for the version i have (or thought i had) would not recognise the software i have installed. I tried updates for other versions with the same result.
I then looked into windows compatibility settings, hoping perhaps the software might work on an earlier version of windows. There was no option for XP SP2 and 98 did not work, but on trying Windows NT 4.0 (SP 5), the software seems to work albeit slowly. This is progress but far from ideal.
I was wondering if anyone can help me get my software working properly on SP3 (or even Win Vista/7). I would rather not have to buy new software since i am concerned my capturing hardware may not work with it. That said if i do have to upgrade my software, what am I best to go for?
Thanks

Re: Ulead Video Studio SE DVD
VS 10 was never meant for anything beyond XP -- though a special patch was issued to get it to work with Vista. Certainly nothing for Win 7. But the problem is that the SE version you have is tweaked to work specifically with your EZCap device, and none of the patches work with SE versions in any case. (I am not sure that VS SE versions came out beyond VS10... But you should be able to click on the ? sumbol up in the top right of the VS screen and check in the 'About...' entry to see what you are using...)
Certainly, though, I never had any difficulty with VS 10 and XP SP3... so I am not sure what is going with you. Have you upgraded your DirectX manually to the latest version from the MS site? (It is not part of the automatic Windows updates...)
As for upating your capture software, you would need to check with the EZCap people to see what they recommend -- as I say, they tweak the software to work with their devices, and the latest, up to date version so the full versions of VS will not necessarily work with the device...

Re: Ulead Video Studio SE DVD
Thanks for the info Ken. You have confirmed what i suspected for some time. Looked into the directx update but couldnt work out what i needed. I already have directx 9, do i need some sort of update for that to make my video software work on SP 3 and where do I find it?
Many thanks.
Many thanks.

Re: Ulead Video Studio SE DVD
Yes, DirectX should be regularly update. Microsoft issues updates every 3 or 4 months, but they are not included in the automatic Windows Update of any version of Windows. You have to go to the Microsoft site and manually download and install the patch. Moreover, one size fits all. The one patch works on XP, Vista and Win 7 (and a host of other sub-sets). The installation program detects what operating system you have and installs only the files appropriate to that version.
You will find a sticky thread at the head of this Board giving the link to the current update patch plus instructions on installing it. (Essentially, you manually download to a temporary folder chosen by you. Then you go through the files downloaded and find the Setup.exe file...

Re: Ulead Video Studio SE DVD
Tried to download the Directx update using the supplied link. Update got as far as starting to install the update when this error message appeared:
"A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted. Please verify the Cryptographic Services are enabled and the cabinet file certificate is valid." Click OK.
This cancels the update and it fails to install. This occurs each time i attempt this action. Any thoughts on why this is happening and how to solve it?
P.S. Ken mentioned a sticky topic regarding this update but I cant seem to find it!

Re: Ulead Video Studio SE DVD
Try this for downloading Direct X drivers, please go HERE and download the latest version of the DirectX End User Runtimes. The most current release is dated June 2010. The file is quite large, around 95 MB. Before you run the file, first create a temp folder to extract the contents of that file into. I just call the folder for example June 2010 DirectX. When you run the downloaded file it will extract 100+ files, so you will want to have a separate folder for them, and once you're finished you can delete this folder and all those files. Once the files are extracted, look for a file called DXSETUP.exe in that folder, and run it. That will update your DirectX drivers.
I've been trying to rundown the mfc42.dll problem, here's what I've found so far:
Wikipedia MS Foundatin Class Library (MFC). That will help explain why I ask the following. There's numerous hits found doing a Google Search on "mfc42.dll"
Check to see if you have the current .NET Framework, and MS Visual C++ Libraries installed. Do this in your Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs for WinXP, for Vista it is Settings>Control Panel>Programs & Features.

Re: Ulead Video Studio SE DVD
Thanks for the link for the directX update. Worked fine this time so that all updated OK.
I think the next problem to solve is the .Net framework and visual basic issue. Looking at what i have and what i should have, it looks like i don't have up to date Net Framework or Visual basic software (don't go beyond the first update listed for each). Can I still get these updates and is so what's the best way to download and install them?
Thanks

FYI - EzCap has a support site and a user forum. (But, there are apparenly lots of "fake" EzCap or "Easy Cap" devices floating around, and the "real" software/drivers won't work with these.)

You can update the .NET Framework through Windows Update. Repeat the process after each update until there are no more .NET updates left.

Re: Ulead Video Studio SE DVD
Thanks but i tried that. Not many updates available and they would not install. Tried manualy downloading and installing as many updates and versions as i could find (not many again) with the same result. Have investigated this problem on a general PC help forum to no avail as yet.GuyL wrote:You can update the .NET Framework through Windows Update. Would downloading the most up to date version of .net framework without the previous versions and updates be OK or do i need the previous versions as well?

Re: Ulead Video Studio SE DVD
No, they have to be done in the order they appear on Windows Update.
I've seen your problem before in two instances:
1) A non-legit copy of windows is installed.
2) The build of the PC pre-installed Windows using a slipstream version. This is a custom install that sometimes breaks what Windows expects to be in place under normal circumstances.
