Problems with clips from Panasonic DMC-FT1

Post by qfieldboden »

Hi

I'm using a Panasonic DMC-FT1 to record some clips, the camera offers an "HD" mode which I want to use. I'm trying to edit the clips in VSP x3, I have alll the latest software installed. The DMC-FT1 saves movie clips as .mov files, when I've got it selected to save in HD I have it set to save as MOTION JPEG, the frame size is 1280x720 and the frame rate is 30fps. The clips play back fine on the camera and also play back fine in WMP and other players. The problem arises whan I want to edit the clips in VSP x3. I can import the clips without any problem but if I try to play them in the timeline if one of the clips is the first item in the timeline VSP stops working and generates a dump file. If I put a still image before the clips they will play Ok but if I try to render the video again VSP stops working.

If I just drop the clips from the camera into the DivX Converter they convert fine with good results but that doesn't help me edit the clips!

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Quentin.

According to the reviews I read on your camera, it records using AVCHD Lite, and VS (along with other programs) have a real problem with this variant of AVCHD. It was developed so small compact digital cameras can record HD video, and so less powerful machines can handle it. While VS can handle AVCHD, Corel would need to provide an update/patch for the Lite variant. Checking Corel's updates for VS X3, so far they have not updated the program so it is capable of editing AVCHD Lite. :(

I hate to disagree, but I believe X3 *can* handle AVCHD Lite (though X2 certainly could not). However, it depends on what jacket it is wearing. If, as some digital still cameras now do, it uses the straight AVCHD .mts/m2ts format, there should be no problem. But in this case it appears that your video would have either a .mov or .mjpg extension, which is what might be causing the problem/

Could you please right click on one of the files as transferred from the camera, but do so within X3 -- either in the library window or timeline -- and copy ALL its properties here please, exactly as they appear.

If they have the .mov extension, then your problem could be that you have the latest version of QuickTime installed, whereas X3 seems to prefer the version it installs which is a couple back from the latest version. You need to reinstall the X3 versioon.

But if it has the .mjpg extension, then you need to ensure that you have the relevant codec on your computer. VS and Windows do not install the Motion JPEG codec natively on your computer. You have to do that yourself, and in this case make sure you have the Panasonic version of the codec, since Panasonic have a reputation for tweaking codecs (including all the AVCHD variants) with their own coding. The best way to ensure this is to install whatever software came with the camera on an installation CD.

Ok, I'm still not up-to-speed on these.. I found some forums, reviews on the AVCHD lite and that's what was reflected in them. I then checked the System Requirements, Input/Output, to see if it included AVCHD lite. I also checked the updates and did not find any reference to it, so I assumed that Corel had not yet added this support. This is a good example of why we strongly urge all questions be posted in the open forums, and not sent by PM.
