Batch Renaming Issue
So, a bit of a problem. I want to rename a LARGE (several thousand) photos. They were taken with different cameras so some are jpeg and some RAW. When I put them into a file and say "arrange by date" voila....they appear as I want them.... in the order of date (and time) taken. However, when I go to do a batch rename in PSPX3, they are "sorted" by file type...not good. (The files are intermixed by date....ie, some taken in the morning are RAW, then some jpeg and on the same date, back to RAW.) I tried making a media tray, but alas, there are so many files, it seems to freeze PSP. So, is there a way to do this in PSP or is there a free utility which reads the files in the order they are in the folder. I have a free utility named (I think) Power Renamer which also organizes the files by type....so is there anything that will rename them based on date (and time taken.) Thanks much.

Re: Batch Renaming Issue
Well, I spent a part of last night and much of this morning on the problem. I found a free utility named "Bulk Rename Utility" which is freeware (I looked at about 30 and downloaded about 10.) This one is pretty powerful and will organize mixed file types based on when they were created. So, as we speak (read?) it is organizing the first 2600 files into an order from 0000 to 2667, using the date created. This was the first renamer I found that would do this particular task. It is made by TGRMN software....which looks like a British site. The utility reads EXIF data. So, this solves my problem of how to label my vacation pics so I can understand them!!!!! (This is what I get for using RAW for the "serious" work and a little point and shoot when we go out strolling around at night or in a park and I don't want to lug a DSLR!!

Here we are seven years later and I want to thank you, pdxrit, for this post way back when. I am now using PSPX8 and this problem still exists! I find this unbelievable. Anyway, you have helped me in numerous ways, not the least of which is assuring me I am not nuts for not being able to batch rename based on the date taken EXIF data.pdxrjt wrote:Well, I spent a part of last night and much of this morning on the problem. Re: Batch Renaming Issue
Gotta thank you for making this thread alive again! I used Bulk Rename Utility for years when I used to do a lot of website work for clients (even back in my Windows 98 days!) but as life changed over the years lost track of it. When you take lots of photos of various events, it pays dividends in time to bulk rename them with relevant names prior to starting any post-processing. I have now downloaded it again thanks to this thread. It really is, IMHO, the absolute best renaming utility available. In fact, it is so versatile it needs a bit of a learning curve to become familiar with all of the options available. And you can't beat free - and no ads or anything!
