Remove update check and messages from VS X3
I need to remove the update notifications and messages that VS X3 displays upon startup from ever happening. Corel tech support seems clueless, they offer stupid suggestions such as "Download and install the updates", which is not an option. Anyone have any idea how to do that?

Re: Remove update check and messages from VS X3
Would you care to let us in on the secret why downloading and installing the updates etc "is not an option"? Because that too would have been my first "stupid" suggestion...
And unless someone on this Board has been fooling around with the code use to compile the program, I suspect you are going to be out of luck. While I agree that this update system developed by Corel is indeed stupid, it is probably -- at least for most users, though I suspect not for yourself -- a step forward from having a completely opaque update system which required users to know where to look for the Do More/Get More tabs, and have to wait at least 3 days, and often considerably longer, for them to appear even if you knew where to look.

Re: Remove update check and messages from VS X3
It really is not a secret.
I built a machine for a customer who wants to have a pay-to-watch video website and they needed a program to edit the video, so I sold the machine with VS X3 on it. The problem is that they are absolute newbies to computers. By this I mean it has taken two weeks of training for them to load the video on the timeline, cut out what they do not want, voiceover, share video, repeat. It is all repetitive stuff, and we are two weeks into the training with the computer still sitting on a desk in my shop, they come by and work with it, eventually to take it home. So if a box pops up where they have never seen one, I get a phone call and it costs me money. No pop-up, no phone call, happy customers.
As an aside, I actually did get this problem solved. Not only do you have to turn off the checkboxes under Message Preferences, you have to delete the files it has already downloaded from the last time it checked. Next time you launch the program you get lots of errors as it has to recreate the data you deleted (files that tell what it has, what it checked and when), then all is well and it will not trouble you again.
I didn't post the secret reason because in my opinion it should not matter WHY I wanted the messages to stop, the program specifically has a checkbox that says "Keep me informed with the latest product related messages". When I uncheck that, the messages should stop regardless of why I unchecked it.

Re: Remove update check and messages from VS X3
Back in the days of Ulead VS, there was a check box in the Preferences, Check Ulead Web site every ___ days. It was checked by default, unchecking it and the program would not check for updates or anything. However they removed it completely with VS X2, and then replaced it with the "Message" system in VS X3. About the only way that I know of to really stop VS X3 from checking, and then throwing the pop-ups, is to not have the computer connected to the internet while working with VS.
Now as a side-note, with everything, most all programs being tied to the internet in some form, for whatever reasons, people that use a computer and part of that being the internet, they will have to get used to this sort of interaction, and especially so if they are diving into web site creation. Unless you made an agreement with them to really teach them how to use a computer, to the point of them being completely "PC literate", you will probably have to find a point to cut-off your tutoring. I can foresee them calling and relying on your instruction for a long time otherwise...
Point out to them sites that have tutorials, like Brian pointed out, and also point them to this web board for questions. Unless and until they get their hands dirty, mess things up, they're really not going to learn.

Re: Remove update check and messages from VS X3
Every time I start VSX3 I get a Message box pop up before the program starts with no message in it which I have to close before the program will start.
Is this the same as the issue being discussed here?
I am updated with the latest updates/patch and both my message preferences are unticked.
Alan above said to delete some files, but where are these files?
I know it's not a serious issue but it's rather annoying nonetheless. Is there a way to stop this blank box appearing?

Hi Phil
Well I think this maybe the same box, but it usually has some link to an update.
Once fully updated the popup window usually stops.
As far as I know there is another window prompting you to register the product.
Check for Updates……….
With VS running select the cogwheel icon top right, a new window opens.
Then select a similar icon again top right and “Check for Updates”
Does it show any updates required?

Re: Remove update check and messages from VS X3
Hello AllanHall,
We need to know what is the exact message in the pop up, since that will drill down the solution in stopping the pop up from appearing. But if it was the update pop up, just install the update and the pop up should stop. If you want to manually download and install the update for the VideoStudio X3, you can visit: http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 0460544373, for all the upates for VideoStudio Pro X3.
If that did not help, I would love to see the pop up that you are getting, just get a screenshot that will be a big help for the people here in the forum.

Abhiel -- he already said the pop-up he gets has *no* message in it at all -- so I am not sure posting an image of an empty pop-up would help anyone at all!!

Re: Remove update check and messages from VS X3
I missed that part.
You can try this open the RUN box by pressing the Windows key + "R" then type %APPDATA% then open the COREL folder then delete the Messages folder. Once that is done, disable the AUTOMATIC UPDATE settings of your program by clicking on the Gears on the Corel Guide Screen. You can refer to the screen Shot below.

Yes this has worked! I don't get the blank box anymore and the program starts straight away.
A couple of observations:
1. After deleting the Messages folder the first start of VSX3 gave an error message about not being able to connect to the Internet - I was connected. Closed that box and the program and started again, no error message and VSX3 opened OK.
2. The program has rebuilt the Messages folder and put it back (I assume this time without an error in it)
3. My "Do More" and "Get More" tabs have dissappeared but I'm not bothered about that as there was no more on there that I wanted anyway.
4. The Message preferences were both ticked when thery wern't before. I have unticked them again.
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I hope this will be of help to anybody else having the annoying blank message box popping up everytime.
Just one thing, as I said I have the latest updates (well I think I have). Whats the latest version number, mine is saying 13.6.2.69. Is this correct?
Happy Christmas to all.
