JVC Video camera capture problem

Post by mpiesse »

I know this makes me sound like an idiot but I have a JVC video camera, an S-connector to a USB ExCAP Video Grabber and Ulead VideoStudio sofrware (a hardware/software bunled product)

I just cannot understand how to capture video using the 'simple' Movie Maker

Can anyone help me, please?

What is the model number of the JVC? If it is a digital vidcam, then you should not be using a Video grabber, but some other method. But that in turn will depend on exactly what type of camera it is, which we can check via its model number...

Hi,

Thank you for your very speedy response - and all the way from the other side of the world (I have visited NZ twice - so I do know what I am talking about!)

My video camera is a JVC GR-D43 - I hope this helps?

Very kind Regards - Mike P (mfpiesse@gmail.com)

Your camera is a mini DV model, using small tapes. As such, you most definitely need to be capturing using a Firewire cable. In fact, that is not 'capturing' but transferring the video to your computer in exactly the same high quality format in which it was originally filmed and in DV/AVI format. That is one of the easiest and best formats to edit in. And once you finish your editing, it is a simple matter of simply choosing Share > Create Video File > DVD.

If you don't have a DV cable, buy one, making sure it has a small 4 pin plug at one end, which goes into the camera. And if your computer does not have a Firewire jack, I would strongly recommend you buy a Firewire card. They are very cheap these days and easily installed if your motherboard has a spare slot.

But the difference between capturing using Firewire and using a USB device will be like chalk and cheese. The USB connection on your camera is really only meant for low quality streaming video...
