Removing shiny spots on clothing from flash...

Post by brucebinder »

Is there a way to remove shiny spots on clothes as the result of a flash? I have attached apic where the knees and tummy have shine that I need to get rid of.

Thanks for any help. Everyone here is always so great sharing information.

There is no one way, and will vary greatly based on the type of clothing and how much detail there is in the picture but in the one you posted you can simply clone it out if you want to. You can also just select it and decrease the brightness.

When cloning you don't have to clone in Normal blending mode. In the case that you present here I'd try the a luminosity or color blending mode. You'll retain the texture and shape but change the brightness or color (or whatever mode you choose). It will look more natural.

When shooting something like that given that you have a point and shoot camera I'd say you need more light. Try to make all of the lights the same color by using the same brand name bulbs for easier editing later. If you're so inclined, you can set the flash to manual on your camera (my wife's Canon point and shoot has a manual flash setting) and you can use that to trigger slave flashes. You'd need to invest some cash if you don't already have something like that but there's an entire movement for people who do just that type of stuff without having to take out a loan. i.e. they do it economically.

Not disagreeing with you here, df, but setting it to a blend mode of luminance to preserve texture doesn't make sense to me. Luminance is both the texture and the brightness of an image. Luminance refers to using the lightness values of the sample point and the lightness channel is where most the texture lies. So luminance shouldn't really preserve the texture though it will get rid of the shiny parts, that's true enough.
