Ulead Photo Explorer 8.0 SE Basic: locks or destroys files.

Post by SyncroScales »

Hi.

I have an older product. I got it a long time ago with my digital camera. I now am using my photo camera and finally got to the software. I do plan on upgrading, but I am learning how to use photo editing the software and looking around at all the products to decide what I want to go with.

I'm having some troubles though.

Ulead Photo Explorer 8.0 SE Basic: locks or destroys files. I put in .tif files.

1. I cannot edit the metadata for some reason. It always says the file is in use (I right click a file and go into properties to edit that way).

2. I have put files into a folder, looked at them, then opened this program and tried to view the files. Some of them are blacked out, others have a windows graphic and when I click on them the software shuts down and I cannot open the file in the software or outside of it (my files are essentially destroyed/un-openable).

Is this normal? Is there any way to change these problems?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forums,

What is the make and model of your camera? Does it record the photos in TIFF format or some form of RAW? PhotoExplorer had problems with some of the RAW image formats, and Ulead did issue a patch for that. However the patch was for the full versions, not the SE, and Ulead was sold to Intervideo, which was sold to Corel, a couple of years ago. If your original photos are in RAW format, Windows Explorer may not show a thumbnail of them.

Thank you for the reply.

Not in Raw.

It takes pictures in jpeg, and then puts them into a tiff container (i believe). Ichecked the cameras options, there is nothing I have enabled that lockes the files.

My camera does not have raw. I plan to look on the patches again, but since I have SE's I don't remember there being anything, and I did not install patches because of that.

Funny thing is: There was one file that let me do it, and sometime affter that, I could no longer do it.

Most show up in the program (except the two I mentioned. One of which I saw once. And they both worked in Ulead Instant viewer first). I'm careful now. If this keeps happening: I will get through these programs as fast as possible, or immediately junk them and not deal with bundled again. I have been looking extensivly at photo programs already, but I'm trying to bide my time and learn as much as as I can.

Any suggestions?

It's not possible to have a jpeg image inside a TIFF. They are 2 completely separate compression formats. TIFF is a lossless, and JPEG is a lossy format. I have a Kodak P880 and it can take photos in Kodak's RAW format which uses the extension KDC. To edit these photos the programs I use, creates a TIFF of those. You still did not mention the name and model of your camera. With that information we can look it up, and help you find out what's happening.

There are some JPEG formats that are not recognized by many programs, like JPEG 2000, and the thumbnail view of Windows operating systems will not display a thumbnail image of that photo. Check to see if the images are being blocked by a security setting of your system.
