Turning video upside-down

Post by pvreditor »

I have x3 and deliberately shot some video upside-down, thinking that I could invert it with VS x3 and have it be rightside-up. However, I looked all over and didn't see a way to do that. Is there a way to invert my AVCHD video in VS x3? It would save me a bunch of re-shooting.

Unfortunately, my camera doesn't have the ability to invert the video. If VS x3 can't do it, I'll have to come up with a custom camera mount and shoot the video again... a major pain.

Thanks for the help!

There's a video filter called Flip, found in the FX, 2D Mapping. Apply it to your clip, then click on the Customize Filter button. It provides the options of Horizontal, Vertical or Both.

Ok, I have to ask. Why did you shoot it upside down if you had the intention of inverting it once you got it into VS?

It's something of a long story. I just started a new job that involves making videos that get uploaded to YouTube. There is a tiny "studio" that is poorly equipped and the current gear either forces me to work straddling a camera on a tripod or setting the tripod up on a table 180-degrees opposite the first configuration. Since not straddling the tripod makes for the most comfortable operation, that's what I did... although it meant that the video would be upside down. (The camera shoots straight down onto a tabletop.) I simply figured that VS x3 could invert the video, since I was able to do that with one other far-less-competent editor a couple years ago.

Once I knew the trick, it all worked out great.

Hi Ron, I've been looking for this filter but can't find it, either when I check 2D Mapping, or "all" filters. I'm using VS Pro 2X. Is this filter something new on 3X?

Thanks!

Hi phnxrsngbr

Yes X3 may have additional filters.

Using X2, select the clip in the timeline.
Below the digital clock is two 90 rotate icons.

These will rotate the video through 90, hit the icon again for 180.
