I couldn't think of a better title... anyway
I'm putting together some costings to revolutionise our viewing room. I work in a TV station Sound & video library. What's happening more often these days are my external to the TV station clients, when auditioning footage prefer low-res video files to be FTP'd rather than authored to DVD.
We have a convoluted VHS capture system but I have since taught them that dubbing to DVD then converting VOB files eliminates the VHS step & re-capturing.
The set-up I had in mind is a PC desktop system hooked up to a Sony J3 (multi broadcast quality tape format) machine via a capture device. There will be a switcher so we can connect DVD recorders and VHS players too.
I can then capture straight from digibeta, SX Betacam and SP betacam based stock to digital video files.
Would be intersted to know if anyone has used Corel VS in such a set-up and how has it performed. I appreciate it'll come down to the capture device and it's output properties but clearly (we are using Roxio at the moment) I would want to know if VS can handle the high res outputs from non-handycam based footage before I recommend it (anything but roxio).
Basically I'm trying to skip the dub to DVD, convert VOB files, use Roxio to convert to WMV or .mov files and send off.
any thoughts?

I guess the main questions are:
What type of "digital video files" will you be capturing to?
What type of "high res outputs" are you dealing with?
What type of "digital video files" will you be capturing to?
What type of "high res outputs" are you dealing with?

Re: TV Broadcasting environment....
We'll be capturing at no higher quality than the DVD standard mpeg2 standard....probably outputting to .mov files (SD) or capturing straight to .mov depending on client needs.
