ATI HD3000 Series and WinDVD Pro 10

Post by Kraster »

Are these GPUs supported by WinDVD Pro 10?

My ATI HD3450 was supported by WinDVD Pro 9 ... but on the requirements page for WinDVD Pro 10 it lists "AMD M7X and above" for ATI GPUs.

I ask because when I play a DVD through WinDVD 10 I see ~10% CPU usage and ~20% GPU usage in CCC. But when I play a Bluray I see ~90% CPU usage and ~3% GPU usage in CCC. What the heck?!

Excessive CPU usage may be due to background tasks:

I suggest that you identify all running applications that load at boot. As you probably know, you can select automatic, manual, or disabled for Windows services. So check the Services list, sort by auto/manual/disabled, and identify all processes that have started. Those processes under auto that haven't started can be safely switched to manual. Check out the following TechRepublic posting regarding services that can be disabled:

If your operating system doesn't include MS Config, you can easily block the launching of background tasks at boot with Spybot Search & Destroy (freeware):

Once installed, open Spybot, click Tools>System Startup and remove the checkmark before processes that you don't want loading at boot. If you're sufficiently brave to use the registry editor [C:\Windows\System32\regedt32], you will find the list of startup processes under HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run. Unlike Spybot Search and Destroy, deleting startup entries from the registry editor is not reversible, so be sure to export deleted subkeys for subsequent retrieval if necessary.
