Can I delete UPX proxy files?

Post by janjatul »

Videostudio has left a lot of large proxy UPX-files.
What happens if I delete these files to recover the disc space?
Will VS create new ones if necessary?

Hopefully I can delete them, but if not can I move them to another disc?

Thanks for any advice :)

If you have finished the projects those proxy files are associated with, then yes, you can certainly delete them... If you later find you need to use that video again, then simply insert the video back into VS and new proxy files will be generated...

Hi. I just want to be precise about when to safely delete the .upx files. Is it after I finished doing the.vsp project? Or after I created a video file? I just finished a project but haven't created a video file out of it yet, and I am planning to burn the project files & the resulting video into DVDs after.

Does SmartProxy work the same way as SmartLink in that it remembers the file?

I thought turning on the SmartProxy even to a project that does not contain HD videos is a cool idea until I found out that it takes too much disk space. Silly.

Hi

The smart proxy files help smooth the project playback, usually a problem with HD files..
The proxy files are not used when Creating a Video File.

Once you have created your video file then the project is literally redundant.
Why would you want to “burn the project files & the resulting video into DVDs after”
Surely you would only need the video files.? Maybe that’s a different question.

Ok back to Smart Proxy

If you remove all the Smart Proxy files, your project may not play as smoothly.
This will not affect Create Video File.

If you right click the HD Video files within a project you can select to Create Smart Proxy.
Using Shift + Click you can select all clips within the timeline. (select first and last clip)
Then Right Click--Create Proxy Files.
The create process may take a while........... View the Queue Manager
Now your system contains proxy files only for that current project.

The smart proxy files take on a name similar to the original video file, this allows you to identify the files.

Proxy files will only be created for video above a certain frame size, view Settings—Smart Proxy Manager—Settings……….

Clear as mud

Hi.

When I said I wanted to burn the project files to dvds, i actually meant the folders that contains the clips, images, audios, etc. that I used on the .vsp project for archiving purposes or if ever I needed to re-edit a proj.

Anyway, I actually know how to turn on the smart proxy and adjust its settings, i guess i was just looking for advice on when to use it wisely. And upon reading some of the stuffs here, I should probably leave it alone except when dealing with HD clips.

And I was wondering if I included the .upx file in the dvd, would it function the same way it did when I first used it?
So going back to the question, does the .upx automatically re-links to the clip that it's used for the same way Smart Links does? I'd rather not include it in the dvd if it doesn't.

Hi

I understand now, you wish to burn a data disc containing the project and associated clips.

Video Studio can create a Smart Package, this copies the projects contents to a new folder, Video, Images, Audio, everything associated with the project including the “VSP” project file. No extra files….
This is probably the best way to archive your project…………

The Proxy Files “upx” are not included in the smart package, I do not think this has been addressed before.

I have just run a quick test,
Created project with HD files.
created a proxy file,
created a Smart Package,
added the proxy file to smart package folder.
Deleted proxy files from Video Studio.

Replaced proxy files from Smart Package to VS proxy folder, although these files now reside in the Proxy folder Video Studio does not see them, a new proxy file has to be created.

So as to your question, no……..the proxy files do not automatically re-link, they would have to be recreated in Video Studio.

Hi trevor,

thanks for going through trouble of testing whether or not the .upx files will re-link. I guess I will delete it now that the project is finished.

I also did the SmartPackage feature and did a little experiment to see how effective it is.
Well, it's amazing that it also included the files that were created in VS (like PaintingCreator files and the screenshots).
However, it refused to work on a vsp project that contains a vsp proj in the timeline, which is kind of a downer.
Still, it saved me the trouble of sorting through multiple folders.
