I am still trying to work out how to manually update Direct X. How do you do that?

I videoed another movie on the weekend, can't even play my Quicktime movie clips without VS crashing. I've had to give all my movies to my husband who is now putting them together on the Mac using Mac software. He doesn't have any problems with them, so am wondering why VS is such a huge problem, and, now I realise, a great waste of time and money.

I think you may find QUICKTIME is half the problem.

May need a little more info on video format/size....

Hi Accolades

Sorry for the delay in replying, a holiday in Kenya getting in the way, its a hard life ……

There are several posters here which may be confusing the issue
Liebling08 did post the details of a Mov HD file on Fri Sep 10, 2010 10:00 pm

As we know there have been problems when using the latest versions of QT, Liebling08 the OP indicates that the latest version is installed but does not say if an earlier version has been tried???????????????

I would imagine that the Mac would use a different QT version.

Liebling08
What version of Quick Time are you using?
The advice is to un-install QuickTime and re-install an earlier version.

Hello all,

Earlier in this thread I posted that I had similar crashing issues when editing both Canon AVCHD and Canon (T2i) MOV files on my Sony SZ330 (2.0 Core 2 Duo) computer and my HP Core i7 (820 1.7GHz) laptop. I have downloaded the latest version of iTunes (10) with QT version 7.6.8. I still have troubles on my Sony SZ330 laptop, but less on the HP laptop. I got a new HP desktop computer with the Core i7 870 (2.93 GHz) CPU, 8GB RAM and a 7200 RPM 1TB drive and Radeon HD5770 Vid card with 1GB RAM. This system seems to handle both files MUCH better, but I still get crashes with VSProX3. I am able to edit the native AVCHD and MOV files much easier and playback is smoother (although not perfect) as long as SmartProxy is enabled. While I believe VS could be vastly improved, throwing horsepower at it helps.

I also loaded Sony Vegas Pro 9, and that seems to handle both video files better than VSX3. I'm just so used to the VS layout and editing workflow that I find myself able to edit much faster in VSX3 compared to SVP9. Is there a next-version wishlist started that the Corel folks might be watching? There are just a few simple workflow/GUI things to add that would make VS the king of speed editors for pros. It would also be neat if VS was open-source enough where programmers could write plug-ins to the GUI to add features (like true multi-cam editing, tabbed interface, external monitor previews, resizeable windows and preview screens, dockers, some sort of elements assistant - like adding video bugs or user generated transitions, etc.).

Anyway, while I've only just got my new system configured and software installed, I haven't had a chance to do much more than an 8 min. video edit. I'll see how it goes with editing our next 1/2-hour beerguystv show. The pilot episode was a nightmare to edit on my Sony laptop, just a little easier on my HP laptop, but I hope episode 2 goes much faster on the new desktop.

Hi!

I have many similar problems with MOV files from my Kodak Zi8 (MOV h.264 video files, AAC LC audio). One thing that's helped considerably is to enable proxy files in the preferences. However, I still get a good number of crashes -- especially when rendering at joins. Corel gave me the same advice re Quicktime, etc., but I am loathe to do so, as so many people, like yourself, have jumped through hoops to no avail.

If you try Sony, be sure to try 10, as 9 has it's own funkiness with (at least my) MOV files!!! I.e., it doesn't bring in the audio....I have to rip it to MP3 and then insert it on a separate track, and it never works well. However, 10 is supposed to have greatly fixed it's MOV capabilities -- so try Movie Studio HD 10 over Movie Studio HD 9 (or Pro, of course, if you're going that route).

It's a shame, really, that Corel can't get this straightened out, as it makes gorgeous MP4 HD renders. My Kodak software (Arcsoft Media Impressions for Kodak) doesn't DO much (which is why I"m looking for better software), but it has no trouble with the files, either. It's all beyond my understanding, and it's all a big crapshoot, as you say!!!!!

Wishing us both good luck on our respective fronts!

Hi Trevor,

Yes, I've tried that and am wondering if that pertains to 7.6.8 as well as 7.6.6? VSX3 crashed a couple times even while simply editing AVCHD files without any MOV files in it. I'll keep working with it as, like I said, I've only editied one video so far.

I've been having a similar problem with VideoStudio on Vista x64 with 8GB ram.

I've been trying to string together some HD wmv files. It just keeps crashing at various points during the editing. Not always at the same point. If I recreate the project from scratch it doesn't crash at the same point. It doesn't seem to matter what video files I use but the problem always happens when using large HD files.

I use Cyberlink PowerDirector to do the same thing and it's no problem. Unfortunately PD isn't very good for creating videos for the iPad, hence trying VS.

I've tried reinstalling the program. Checking I've got all the latest drivers and Windows updates etc.

If this does HD video it should handle large files?

I've lost count of the no. of crashes I've had (50+) and am thinking of getting a refund unless someone has some ideas... :(

Thanks
Trevor Andrew

Hi shanezep

To be honest I don’t understand what’s happening with QuickTime and the problem versions, for me its not a new problem but seems to be ongoing as QT is updated.
I noticed problems when first installing VS 10, now that’s a while back, I believe VS10 came with the new QT 7, this did cause problems and reverting to QT 6 seemed to stop the crashes.
Now I’m using QT 7.6.8 without problems.

Interestingly Corel has recognised the QT versions as being an issue.

kelann
I understand your concerns regarding the QT , but reverting to an earlier version has cured problems, at least for some users. I wouldn’t advise to take this option if I hadn’t used first. I’m not saying that it will fix your crashes, but its worth trying, you can always reinstall the latest version, the QT program will ask you to update anyway.

“Jumping through the loop” as you say hasn’t caused any further problems afaik, you ask the questions and we advise as best we can, its up to you whether you accept the advice.

Yesterday I downloaded a trial version of VSX3. Tried working with some MOV files and crashed (many times). I went to the "Find Answers" and it suggested that one should make sure they had the latest version of QT. I updated to 7.6.8 - no help. A few posts back had a link to corel.custhelp.com which suggested that you go back to QT 7.6. Did so and I have not had a problem since.

Hi

Thanks Rich for the conformation that reverting to an earlier version does fix crash issues.

Crashes are not just caused by QuickTime so for some reverting QT will not cure their problems, I feel its always worth the effort.

Again thanks for the feedback.

Hello everyone,

I just posted this in another thread, but I've done a lot of research over the past few days because I'm under pressure to get our next show out (beerguystv.com). It airs on our local cable channel and I'm editing it in VSPX3. some of the footage was taken with my Canon T2i (.MOV files) and it crashes regularily with those files. After much research and watching some videos from here (http://www.learningdslrvideo.com/) I downloaded a trial version of Cineform Neoscene and batch converted all of my .MOV files. The converted files are much larger, but they edit like a dream in VSPX3 - smooth as glass. Dave also refers to a free conversion software, which I haven't tried yet, but it would save the $129 that Neocene costs. AVCHD files seem to run OK in VSPX3, not perfect, but they don't crash the program as much, but native .MOV files will ALWAYS crash it. Try out Cineform Neoscene and see if this solves your problem. It did mine.

Looks like a FIX

After doing the usual uninstall and reinstall of VSP X3 and continued crashing I decided to try Trevor's suggestion regarding QuickTime. I had 7.6.8 installed. I uninstalled it and installed the QT that is in the Utilities section of the VSP X3 software disk. That version is 7.5.5. Installed updates for VSP X3. VSP X3 now appears to be working fine. Certainly recommend this to all who have yet to do it. Thanks Trevor and all who found the source of the problem. I only wonder when and how we'll find an updated version of QT that won't be a problem with VSP X3.

Hi Jerry

Thanks for that.
I cannot take credit for the fix, I’m just the messenger, all regular forum users would recommend the same.
The problem has been about for a few years, so it’s not a new one, I first noticed when installing VS 10. I reverted to the one provided with VS 9.
Now Corel have recognised the issue and have provided details on their site with a link to download an older version. (Corels Knowledge Base)

To be fare to Corel they are just playing catch-up, chasing the new or modified codec’s created by the camera manufactures. But at least they provide the version that works with their produce.

Nice to know it works for you.

the latest fix to Visual Studio X3, at least on W7, fixes the problem of crashing. Merely downgrading to QT7.6.0 wasn't enough. I haven't time to explore whether it is safe to go back to qT7.6.8 but am sure my iTunes will force that at some point.

I am now able to edit and render from a .mov file. That it is not as fast as I would expect given that this is a Quad-core Nehalem with SATAII drives still its pretty good (and btw, I highly recommend those obsessed with performance to use the resource monitor in the performance pane of the task manager on W7 (I have w7 ultimate I don't know if that's available in home or any other version).
