Can't open EPS documents from Illustrator 13

Post by J_R »

I'm trying to open some AMD partner logos, and they're in EPS format. I tried opening them in PSPX2 originally, and it gave the error that "This PostScript file is either not valid or contains unsupported features" so I tried PSPX3 and the same thing is happening. I tried opening them in Notepad to see if there was anything in there to identify the program that was used to create them and it appears to be Illustrator 13. I don't have Illustrator 13, so how do I resolve this issue with PSPX3?

If necessary, I can send the file in question to someone in dev so that a patch can be issued...

This is a quote taken from Corel's own knowledgebase.

Answer ID 756793 - Does Paint Shop Pro support the EPS/PS/AI file format?
Paint Shop Pro uses an external third party library for the opening of PostScript (.AI, .EPS, and .PS) files. Paint Shop Pro does support the opening of these files, but it is limited to the capabilities of this library.

Paint Shop Pro supports opening valid and complete PostScript (AI, EPS, PS) files through level 2. It can open certain PostScript level 3 files (depending on the data in the file), but it does not support the features that are new for PostScript level 3. Paint Shop Pro supports full antialiasing of objects and retention of transparency information. It supports reading up to 100 pages per PostScript file. All PostScript information will be converted to raster (bitmap) information when read. Paint Shop Pro only supports reading PostScript files that are self-contained and don't need additional auxiliary files (such as .AI files that may need auxiliary files only available with Adobe Illustrator). One of the most common EPS file open issues we have seen for Paint Shop Pro 8 is EPS files using text font names not defined on the user's computer. If the text font is not defined on the computer, the third-party PostScript reader will fail to open the file. Paint Shop Pro supports saving PostScript level 1 (for monochrome and grayscale images only) and level 2.
It's the only answer I could find that was somewhat satisfactory. Though it specifically states PSP 8 I imagine this hasn't changed significantly at all. Vectors are still on the low end in Paint Shop Pro. I keep hoping for some more advanced options as far as vectors are concerned but I'm okay with what I've got.

So it's not a bug that needs to be patched inside of Paint Shop Pro. Though it would be nice if they could offer better support for these types of formats they rely on an external library for this sort of thing. And short of this library handling properties available in Illustrator CS3 you won't be able to open it in PSP.

Might I suggest a vector editor such as InkScape or possible Scribus to open that illustrator file. It's probably closer to what you're looking for. But then again these may not be able to fully open the files either. It's hard to say.

Fixing illustrator files use recover ai file. The program works under Windows 98 and higher. The utility restores .ai files after hdd failures, hacker attacks, malicious software. The tool uses contemporary ways of repairing illustrator info.

@J_R

you may want to try using CorelDraw, since CorelDraw is a vector base graphics and image editor program. You can download the trial here.
