the coaxial connection to your receiver could have something to do with not being able to hear audio. Try to connect using just RCA cables from your DVD Player to your TV Audio input (bypass the receiver -- just to see if the dvd player can actually play mpeg audio).
Alternatively, you might also have audio playback options in your dvd's menu setup. Try switching the audio options to see if that helps...

You know what, I thought of exactly the same thing and just tried it. Yes there was sound!
The coaxial input on the back of my receiver reads "PCM Input". Evidently only LPCM signals can be processed if you use coaxial digital cable, I suppose.
I'll burn another LPCM disc just for the best compatibility.
