Hello,
I currently have a dvd with some older files that i filmed and when the files are played on the television they are in the 16:9 format.
When i take the VOB files off of the DVD i tried to just rename them to .mpeg with no success. So i used a video converter and changed them to mpegs.
I noticed that they are in the 720x480 dimensions. Is this 16:9?
However when i view edit them in CorelVS even if i view them in 16:9 they still seem to be exporting to the 720x480 dimensions and when i play them they are playing in the 4:3 format.
And when i upload the video to the web. It plays in what looks to be a smaller black box around the video. And i think it is in the 4:3 format still.
I don't know it is rather confusing hope some of my above explanation helps.
Should i convert the VOB file to something other than an mpeg and then edit it that way.
My goal is to get the 16:9 VOB file to play on Vimeo at the highest quality possible.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Vob file to Vimeo
You can't tell from that... DVD pixels are not square and both 4x3 & 16x9 (NTSC) DVDs are 720x480. There is supposed to be a header in the MPEG/VOB file that tells the docoder/player what the aspect ratio should be.I noticed that they are in the 720x480 dimensions. Is this 16:9?
When you set your project properties, you should be able to set the aspect ratio as well as the resolution/pixel ratio. Or, when you "share" the video, you should be able to set the aspect ratio.

Hey Doug,
Thanks for your reply. I see what you are saying now about having the 16:9 dictate how the video is played.
But i have another questions. What is the best way to "share" a video to be seen on Vimeo. I know that vimeo has it's compression tips. But i dont know what is the actual best file type.
Could anyone give a step by step to best way to create a video for Vimeo.

Re: Vob file to Vimeo
Knowing that Vimeo, YouTube, et al are going to re-encode the video anyway, I always render the video to the highest possible quality that will still fit within their size requirements.

Hey Black Lab,
Thanks for your input. However i am kind of new to editing. So the highest possible quality would be achieved through what "Sharing" settings.
There are so many different options when creating a video file. Which one do you thing works best.
Just so you know i am shooting with a Canon 7d so what would be the best way to get a 7d file to vimeo. Mpeg optimizer, WMV etc etc.
thanks so much for your assistance.

Re: Vob file to Vimeo
I am also wondering if you actually used .mpeg as the extension when you tried to change the .vob extension. It should have been .mpg... in other words, without the 'e'.
