Where's my bloomin printer???

Post by btccfan »

Hi, after wife killed laptop and I had to reinstall everything, I'm having a problem finding my printer with PSP X1. It's a cheapy Dell inspiron 1545, dual core @ 2.00g running Vista 64bit. I have an HP psc for text and scanning the crossword so we can both do it (we're not into sharing, I don't like that she's always wrong and she doesn't like that I'm always right), an Epson V500 for photo scanning and an Epson stylus pro 4000 for fancy printing. With PSP X3 everythings fine and I am given the option of either printer but with X1 I only get the HP come up and no option to change the printer. I can't see any other option outside of the 'print box' to add a printer so what's going on??
Obviously, everything used to be fine. The only thing I have done differently this time round is install the Epson printer first. The PSP X1 I am using is an OEM version if that could make any difference?? Should I try just re-installing PSP or does any bright spark out there know what I've missed???
Thanks in advance

ps Nothing to do with Corel but I'm a bit confused about something else.
Windows "system" says "sytem type: 64-bit operating system"
But my "computer OS(C:)" says "program files (X86)". I thought X86 meant 32 bit OS??????
As is plainly obvious I don't know a great deal about computers so somebody please enlighten me. Thanks

For the computer portion:

"I thought X86 meant 32 bit OS??????"

Right.

A 64 bit operating system (computer) say with 10GB memory turns itself into a 32 bit computer (with 4GB memory max) to run these older 32 bit applications (programs). And 32 bit applications can only see 2GB memory!

Corel is a 32 bit application.

Microsoft changed the operating system method of selecting printers in a way that broke that function in PSP's modified print dialog.
The solution is to temporarily change the Windows default printer.
If you hunt around you'll find a couple of small utility programs that can simplify that.

Thanks to both of you.
For the printer it was, control panel, hardware, printers and right click on the one you want and set as default. Fantastic thanks!

I see, sort of. So does that mean I've got a 64 bit OS acting as a 32 bit or a 32 bit that wrongly calls itself a 64 bit?

"I see, sort of. So does that mean I've got a 64 bit OS acting as a 32 bit or a 32 bit that wrongly
calls itself a 64 bit?"

You have a 64 bit OS (native mode) that can also run 32 bit applications (legacy mode).

If you purchase a 64 bit program that will run on your OS then you can utilize more of your memory
and speed ... basically the full potential of your computer and OS.

For new 32 bit programs that you have purchased (Corel X3 e.g.) or ones you reinstalled (you
purchased years ago for your old computer) then the new 64 bit PC must turn itself into your "old PC"
to run the 32 bit program. Otherwise, you would not be able to run the 32 bit applications at all!

For all 32 (or 64) bit applications, before you install them, it would be a good idea for you to first check
with the vendor to verify they will run on your OS/PC ... Vista Home Premium / 64 bit.
**** You should verify your system information.
To verify my computer information I click on:

In Windows:
***********
Start
Settings
Control Panel
System
Then I look for "System type:", among other data there:
Mine says 32 bit.

In Corel X3:
************
Help
About
System Info
Pages of information is listed there....

If you have a new PC ,most are running a minimum of Win 7 Home Premium 64- Bit.
A very good idea is to go to The Windows 7 compatability site http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compat ... fault.aspx
and check that the hardware and software you are trying to use are indeed compatable.
This will save you alot of frustration.
