VSX3: Jerky output from smooth input

Post by GeoffO »

I have a number of clips which are all shown running smoothly on my Panasonic HDC-HS700 LCD screen. After downloading/capturing into either VSX3 Pro or the Express version, dragging the clips into the timeline and then running, the first half minute runs smoothly then it goes in jerky stops and starts.
I am evidently doing something wrong, but can't discover what it is.
Have produced a .m2ts file, but Windows Media Player only gives me sound (no pictures at all) while VLC gives pictures and audio together, but in spurts, as though the computer (or the program) can't cope with all the data. What file format should be used to produce output that will run smoothly, and how do I tell VSX3 to do it as anything other than a 'project file'? Also, what program do you recommend for showing smooth HD video output please? Am using a 4-core machine with 4GB RAM and plenty of spare disk space.
You have helped me before and I am confident that you will do it again!
Regards,
GeoffO

Hi

Smart Proxy

Make sure this is turned on and that proxy files have been created for all files added to the timeline.
View :- Settings--Smart Proxy File and Queue Manager
Manually create files by right clicking the clips and selecting Create Proxy Files.

Video Files
What type are they? Right click a clip and select properties.

Camera Software
Installing the software that came with the camera may install codecs provided, which may help in playing back video on your pc.

Please explain what Smart Proxy is, and what it should do.

I tried getting clips from the camera into the software that came with the camera (HD Writer AE 2.1), but the only mention of “Proxy” on the display or in the manual is the advice to the user to ask their “internet provider for the setting method, such as whether to match the proxy (server) settings with the settings of the web browser (such as Internet Explorer)”.
That did not seem to be relevant to the present problem, so I went into Video Studio Pro X3 with the Panasonic HDC-HS700 connected to computer’s USB port. Here follows the sequence of events and selections made:
Smart Proxy enabled.
Capture/Import from Mobile Device (as advised by Rob717 here, on 5 August). This selected 00000.MTS to 00011.MTS
Offered choice of HDD or Memory Card icons. HDD offered clips already on the computer’s hard drive; chose Memory Card although there is at present no card in the camera, just the 240GB hard drive. (Thinks: could this be another reason for the presence of a card slot?)
Selected ten clips, pressed OK, progress bar came up. When finished, Import settings came up:
Capture to Library (selected)
Library folder: Video
Insert to Timeline (selected)
Add video date information as title (selected)
Entire video (selected)
OK
Another progress bar came up. Selected all ten clips and ran them.
Jerkiness started towards the end of the first clip (exactly as before) after 1 minute and 7 seconds of running smoothly.

Had another try, 20 August at 0950:
Captured clips, enabled Smart Proxy, right-clicked on clips and selected “Create Proxy Files”. Ran clips; error at same position; video stopped; sound continued; error message “The program has encountered an unspecified error and has stopped functioning. Please contact Corel Technical Support and send the dump file for analysis.
C:\Users\Geoff\AppData\Local\Temp\vstudio_1.6.2.21_20100820_095042.DMP

Am about to send the dump file and await results.

Hi Geoff

Smart Proxy

High Definition video files are large, they are difficult to play and even harder to edit.
Slow and jerky playback being the main problems.

Smart Proxy creates a smaller sized file, a virtual file which video studio uses to edit the video. This improves playback allowing us to manage the editing.

With Smart Proxy turned on any files being inserted to the timeline will have its proxy files created automatically. Any existing files may need creating manually. (right click the clip)

The proxy files do take a long time to create, so some patience is required.
Check the Smart Proxy File Manager and Queue Manager to view progress.

If you close Video Studio before all proxy files are created they will need creating manually.
Make sure the proxy files are created.

Ok
High Definition video does cause problems as you are finding out.
There are so many camera manufacturers creating their own flavours of HD
Unfortunately I don’t use HD video although I do have a few samples.
I have recently been looking at the Panasonic 700 series cameras with a view to upgrading, sometime.
But if there is a problem it would obviously be a factor in my choice.

You say that the MTS files range from 25 Mb upwards, I would be interested in looking at the smallest video.
I’ll send a link that you can upload the file, that’s if its acceptable to you.

Hi Trevor,
I think I have just uploaded a couple of files to you. I read the notification from Windows Live before reading this, so they are the first two clips, straight from the camera's hard drive. The glitch starts 1 min 7 secs into the first one, just before the second clip starts.
Thanks for staying on the case. Will send anything that might help you solve the problem; I have a feeling that it might need a more expensive editing program.
All good wishes,
Geoff
