The extension for the native TM700 files is .MTS. If you have .m2ts I think they come from the HD writer download and become maybe incompatible with the VS programs.

Hi erdne, that may well be the problem. I think that I did the download using HD. I'll take a bit of video and see if it makes a difference to just download without using HD. Many thanks, Roy.

Hi erdne. Thanks for the information to date. I've tried various things without success. I've now bought a programme, AVS, which appears to do everything except make the tea. I've used it and transferred the .m2ts to mpegs and they have, of course, gone into the programme no trouble. What erks me is that the original files won't open up direct from the desktop when selected. I've found, too, that in transferring the files to mpegs it has reduced the file size from 17+ GB''s to 7+ GB's. I've obviously lost a lot of detail information in the transfer. The better quality was the point of getting the new camcorder. I'm on to Panasonic at the moment to see what they have to say. I'm not holding my breath. If anybody comes up with any other ideas I'd appreciate their thoughts. Cheers, Roy.

Hi

The final quality whether it be Standard Definition DVD or High Definition Bluray depends on what you intend to make.

If you have a Bluray DVD player then you should retain the HD video files, ultimately making a Bluray disc.

If you intend to make a Standard DVD then your files have to be converted to Mpeg2.
This is the type of file being used on a standard DVD.
At full quality for 60 minutes the file size will be approximately 4 GB.

4.3 Gb is the capacity of a standard DVD.
A Duel Layer as the name suggests, holding double

So the question is what are you intending to make?

Thanks for that reply, Trevor. I appreciate what you say. I do, at this stage, intend to burn to standard DVD but intend to keep the movie on a back up hard drive. This could give the opportunity in the future of burning it, if it's still in HD, to Bluray should I wish to. I guess that I'm probably wrong but is it that VS edits in mpeg2 but retains the original HD copy on which the edit instructions operate? If this is so then should I wish to produce an HD version presumably I could do so as the instructions developed in the edit suite would still be valid. However, my original problem is still extant.
I can't download into VS 11.5 directly from the camcorder which I feel that I should be able to do and have done in the past with my S/VHS camcorder. The programme just does not recognise the camcorder. Likewise, downloading to the desktop gives me files that VS doesn't recognise.
erdne has stated, in a previous posting, that he has downloaded direct to his PC and the files have opened OK into VS11.5, but he was working with Vista. I wonder if it is the fact of working with Windows 7 is the problem although the handbook for the camera quotes Windows 7.

Hi Roy

I think we have to agree to disagree on VS11’s capture options………..

You have two ways to get the files from the camcorder to the pc.

1 / Your pc will recognise the camera card as a removable hard drive showing in Computer.
From here you should be able to copy and paste the MTS files to a folder on the pc.

2 / Panasonic provide you with some software “HD writer”. Using this should allow you to transfer the files to a folder on the pc.

From here you insert them to the video studio timeline.

I assume you have tried both methods and that VS 11 does not recognise either file.
………………………………..
I am using XP and can import Panasonic 700 type files to Video Studio X2. (a sample from Geoff, another forum user)

Have you tried using the trial version of X3, if this works then the problem is definitely VS 11.

I am away for two weeks holiday/vacation, topping up my video footage in Kenya.
I think I am regretting not upgrading my camera, and would have chosen the Panasonic 700 type.

Thanks Trevor. I'll try all you suggest. Have a great trip to Kenya. Been there a couple of times and found it well worthwhile. This present movie I'm working on is of a trip to Tanzania in July. Had a great time and got some great video. Zimbabwe is well worth a visit too when things improve there.
Regards, Roy.
