did PSPX3 demo mess up PSPX@?

Post by surfgeo »

i tried the demo, and then removed it using "ad remove programs" in windows xp. now, all my personal scripts i had for batch processes (mostly resize and add a watermark, etc) are GONE from my PSPX2 and when i write a simple resize script it fails with an error.
wtf? i am really displeased at the moment. i cant think of anything else that would do this. is this a trick to force you to upgrade?
and since all posts are moderated, will this question even appear in the forum?

Believe it or not the moderators only care about people posting in the wrong places, making meaningful posts (questions or providing useful information) and following the rules. You have a valid question despite the conspiracy theory at the end.

First, others have had the demo and X2 installed on their systems and removed X3 without harming their X2 installation. So to answer your question X3 does not intentionally damage X2 to try and force you to upgrade. Kind of a pathetic option for Corel to even consider since you can re-install X2 or repair X2 anyway. And Corel isn't that evil.

There's always the possibility that if you use an intermediary program to do the uninstallation, problems could occur as a result even though they're supposed to make the job easier and more efficient. However, there is a specific problem that you might want to check out. And it's been mentioned on these forums before. Trev Bowden brings it up in this topic

http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=38039

And says he got the information from Suzsplace.com which is an excellent resource for information on PSP by the way.

According to this sometimes when removing X3 it will also remove the My PSP Files folder. Does your folder still exist? And what is the error you get when you try to save a script? I would imagine it's something along the lines of it can't find the directory or can't create the file because of the directory not existing.

If this is the case, you're going to want to go through and remake this file structure or start pointing those file locations somewhere else because that's your problem. But it's only one option. Though admittedly the only option I could think of. :D

To answer your second question first...
The moderation here is done by fellow users of the software, not by company people. The first two posts by a new poster are always viewed by a moderator, but mostly just to prevent spammers. After that your posts are automatically displayed. A moderator would delete something that was obscene, spam, promoting pirated software or personal abuse directed at another member, or might move something to a more appropriate forum, but I doubt any of us would do anything just because your post was critical of Corel. I doubt anyone has been more critical of Corel than me, especially Corel's dreadful treatment of PSP.

As far as losing X2 stuff after uninstalling X3, it shouldn't happen, but because of a bug, it does. It wouldn't have if you had answered "No" when asked if you wanted to delete private information (or something similar), but even if you answer "Yes" at that point it should only delete the stuff it added during the installation.
BUT
If you don't have a backup that you can restore from, you need to accept some blame yourself. Every computer component will fail eventually, and if you have been reckless enough not to backup your computer then losing data is inevitable. It is just a matter of when, but it will definitely happen. Please, please backup your documents.

When documents are deleted, it is often possible to recover them because usually the data is still there but the hard drive's index to the data has been erased, but the data itself is still there. It could be that new data has overwritten the old stuff, but especially if it happened recently, you can probably get the deleted files back.
Try Recuva from http://www.piriform.com/recuva. It is freeware, but download the "slim" edition from the builds page to avoid getting a useless toolbar included. http://www.piriform.com/recuva/builds

well, i am not a computer techie, just know enough to use them - i am just a photographer. the My PSP folder is there, but the scripts are gone. the error message says the directory string is invalid. i didnt lose any other files especially not images, and i do back up all my photography.

when i write a new script, and save it either in protected or trusted scripts folders, i can see them in the batch process box, but when i run them they crash on the first file, even for the simplest script that is just a resize to 50%.

looks like i have to fork out the bucks and upgrade as the original disc is god knows where....
